Bentley, Off to 3-0 Start, Back on Road to Face Bridgeport Saturday

WALTHAM, Mass. – After a game-winning three by senior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/ Wells HS) with 2.5 seconds left produced a 77-75 victory at Merrimack College Wednesday, the Bentley University men's basketball team will take a 3-0 record to the University of Bridgeport Saturday for the second of four consecutive road games. Tip off at Hubbell Gymnasium is set for 2 pm.

Bentley is one of four Northeast-10 teams that have opened with three consecutive wins, a group that also includes Saint Anselm, Stonehill and Southern Connecticut.

Bridgeport, on the other hand, has dropped its first two, giving up 98.5 points a game in home losses to Southern New Hampshire and Southern Connecticut. The Purple Knights have been idle since Sunday.

Coach Jay Lawson's Falcons own an impressive .550 field goal percentage and an even better .630 eFG% following the first three games. They've connected with a 40 percent success rate from three and have made over 65 percent of their two-pointers.

Senior All-Conference forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) has already moved past seven players on Bentley's all-time scoring list this season and is now 11th with 1,511. He became the program's 13th 1,500-point scorer with a jumper with about five minutes left in the first half at Merrimack.

Bentley's other double figure scorers are grad student and guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), Furness and junior guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S/Hun School (N.J.)), all of whom have a team-best 10 assists. They average 12.7, 12.3 and 11.0 points, respectively with Furness 9 of 19 from three and Duke shooting 79 percent overall.

Hyland, a third-team All-Conference pick last year, is coming off his best game of the season, 23 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, including one delivered to Furness for the game-winner.

Saturday's game will be a homecoming of sorts for sophomore guard Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS), whose hometown is only about 20 miles from the Bridgeport campus. He's been a solid performer off the bench thus far, averaging 6.3 points and 5.3 rebounds with an .889 field goal percentage.

Scoring wasn't an issue for Bridgeport in its first two games with the Purple Knights putting up nearly 90 a game. Five players are averaging in doubles with senior guard Ernest Rouse topping the list at 19.0. Senior guard Jesse Jones has also been productive, scoring 16.5 a game.

Jones and Rouse were also double-figure scorers for last year's 24-7 Bridgeport team, putting up 14.1 and 13.8 points a game, respectively.

The string of four straight on the road continues next week with the Falcons at Assumption Tuesday and Holy Family next Saturday.
