Bentley Looks to Strengthen Playoff Positioning with Saturday Matinee vs. Stonehill

WALTHAM, Mass. – With just two games left in the regular season, the Bentley University  men's basketball team knows it will be seeded either fourth or fifth in the Northeast Division for the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championships, which get underway Feb. 28.

The Falcons, who control their own destiny in terms of earning the higher seed, will finish with a pair of home games. Eighth-place Stonehill College will visit the Dana Center for a 3:30 pm game on Saturday, and second-place Franklin Pierce will be the opponent for the regular season finale on Tuesday.

Bentley, 16-9 overall and 10-9 NE-10 after dropping its last two, is even with Southern New Hampshire in the standings, but should the two teams finish with the same record, the Falcons would win the tie-breaker by virtue of an early season win over Saint Anselm.

There's a significant difference between the fourth and fifth seeds. The fourth seed would get a home game against the number five team from the Southwest while the fifth seed would travel to the number four team in the Southwest.

Bentley, which has put up 95 points in each of its last two home games, has struggled offensively in its last two contests, averaging only 64 points and shooting slightly under 40 percent in road losses to St. Michael's and Southern New Hampshire.

Sophomore forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS), limited to a season-low six points at SNHU Wednesday, will be looking to return to the form that has seen him put up 18.2 points a game for the season, including 21.3 in a dozen Dana Center appearances. McFarland ranks in the top ten in the NE-10 in all three shooting categories, including second in free throw percentage (.875) and fourth in three-point accuracy (.475).

Senior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS), second on the team with a 14.0 scoring average, has moved to within three of the Bentley career record for three-pointers, 276 by Sean Cooke '06. He's averaged 3.2 three-balls in home games this winter and is fourth in the NE-10 this season with 68.

Junior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), who scored a career-high 21 points against Southern New Hampshire in his first career start, has boosted his scoring average to 10.9 after putting up 15 or better in four of his last five games.

Stonehill will come into the Dana Center looking to end a four-game slide that has dropped the SKyhawks to 7-17 overall and 4-15 conference.  Like Bentley, they've played a number of close games of late with six of the last eight decided by four points or less.

First-year head coach Chris Kraus has a young team with six of his top seven scorers either freshmen or sophomores.  Six-foot-seven Ryan Logan is having a productive rookie year as he averages a team-best 11.1 points and 6.7 rebounds.

The only upperclassman in that group, six-foot-eight junior Jack Cole, contributes 10.3 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds a game. He's one of only seven conference players who collects at least three offensive rebounds per contest.

In the first meeting between the two this season, Bentley shot 55 percent, including 12 of 25 from outside the arc, en route to an 81-63 victory. JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) led the Bentley starters with 15 points and the bench contributed 28 points on 9-for-15 shooting.

Tuesday's regular season finale against Franklin Pierce will also be Senior Day for the Falcons.
