Grassa, Bentley Shoot Past Le Moyne for 4th Straight, 82-73

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical HS) buried seven three-pointers en route to 24 points and also handed out six assists as Bentley University shot past Le Moyne College, 82-73, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball at Ted Grant Court Wednesday night.

The victory, Bentley's fourth straight, boosted the Falcons to 11-3 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Le Moyne, which led by as many as ten in the first half, slipped to 7-6 overall and 4-3 NE-10.

Sizzling shooting by Le Moyne (67 percent over the first 13 minutes) helped the Dolphins open a 30-20 lead. Eleven points from senior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind.) and a trio of trifectas off the bench from Nate Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) were instrumental in the fast start for the home team.

Three-balls from Grassa and sophomore guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS), and a foul-line jumper by junior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) got the Falcons back into the game, cutting the deficit to two, 30-28.

After Le Moyne answered with a pair of baskets, Bentley embarked on a 10-1 spurt to take a lead it would never give back. Junior forward Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) ignited the run with a three and later tied the game at 35 with a lay-up with 2:23 left in the first. Following a missed free throw by the Dolphins, two from the line by Grassa gave the Falcons their first lead since the opening minutes.

A little more than a minute later, Grassa buried his third triple of the opening half to make it a 40-35 contest.

On top three at the half, Bentley made six three-pointers in as many attempts during the first five minutes of the second, extending the advantage to nine, 58-49. Grassa had three of the six, Shaw connected on two and Koury dropped one in from the right corner.

After Le Moyne pulled within three with nine-plus minutes still to play, a three-point play from freshman guard Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./Cushing Academy) launched a string of seven straight points by Bentley, making it a 10-point spread with 6:46 left, 69-59.

Le Moyne got back within four with 0:52 on the clock, but two free throws apiece by junior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and Furness closed the door on the home team.

Bentley shot 50 percent from three-point land, with Grassa's 7-of-9 from downtown leading a 13-of-26 performance. Furness was three of four from beyond the arc and Shaw had a pair of threes in four attempts.

Grassa was joined in doubles by four teammates with Shaw netting 14 on 6-of-8 shooting, Furness and sophomore forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) 11 apiece and Hyland 10 off the bench. McFarland led the Falcons on the boards as he came within one of a double-double.

Champion matched Grassa in the scoring column, but he needed 23 shots to net his 24. Gause followed with 19 as the two partnered for 43 of Le Moyne's 73 points.

Bentley shot 53 percent overall and held the Dolphins to 44 percent, including just 35 percent over the final 27 minutes.

Bentley will be at home Saturday for a 3:30 pm encounter with Southern Connecticut State.
