Bentley Will Take on Southern New Hampshire on Senior Day

WALTHAM, Mass. – It'll be Senior Day at the Dana Center Saturday, but it will be two young teams on the court when the Bentley University Falcons take on Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball at 3:30 pm.

Six of Bentley's top eight are freshmen or sophomores (with twice as many of the former), and SNHU's top five scorers include three sophomores and a freshman.

Prior to the game, Bentley's two seniors, guards Mike Topercer (Scottsdale, Ariz./New Hampton Prep) and Mikerson Laurent (Hamilton, N.J./Hun School), will be recognized for their contributions. Topercer has started at the point most of the season and Laurent has been a four-year member of the squad.

Bentley, 7-15 overall and 5-13 NE-10, is coming off a four-point loss to St. Michael's on Tuesday. That marked the fifth time in the last six games the Falcons have dropped a game by four or less, and the seventh time this season they've fallen by five or less.

The Falcon offense has been powered by junior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS), sophomore wing J.P. Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) and freshman forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS). Combined, that trio has accounted for 61 percent of the scoring this season (and 67 percent since Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) was lost to a season-ending injury) and 60 percent of the steals.

Grassa buried six three-pointers during a season-best 26-point night against St. Michael's and has retaken the team-lead in scoring from McFarland with his norm up to a season-best 14.7. He's third in the NE-10 in three-pointers with 63, and has connected from long distance a conference-high 145 times since the start of last season.

McFarland is coming off the most productive two-game stretch of his young career, with 26 points and 12 rebounds at Saint Anselm Sunday and 18 and 10 in the St. Michael's game. He has seven double-doubles to his credit, and is averaging 14.4 points, eight rebounds and 1.3 blocks, a combination no other conference player has achieved since 2009.

Koury is the team's third double-figure scorer as he's averaged 11.6 points and 1.9 steals since his insertion into the starting lineup four games into the season.

Southern New Hampshire, following a 9-3 start, has been 4-6 since Jan. 12, including overtime losses to Assumption and Adelphi. In each of the six losses during that time, the Penmen have been held to 60 or less in regulation.

There's balance at the top of the stat sheet with junior guard Mike Stys, freshman wing Rodney Sanders and sophomore forward B.J. Cardarelli all producing between 11.6 and 11.9 points a game. All three have three-point range, with a total of 105 between them, with Sanders shooting 42 percent from downtown.

There's also balance in rebounds (five between 4.3 and 5.4), assists (three with 50 or more) and steals (four with 20-plus, including 36 by Sanders).

In the earlier meeting this season, Grassa and McFarland combined for 38 points but SNHU forced 20 turnovers and dominated at the line (21-7) to prevail 70-60.

Bentley will play its final two road games next week, at Franklin Pierce Wednesday and at Stonehill Saturday.
