Le Moyne Scores Four Second-Chance Points in Final 95 Seconds to Edge Bentley, 70-69

WALTHAM, Mass. – Six-foot-ten graduate student Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y.) scored four second-chance points in the final minute and finished with a game-high 23 as Le Moyne College pulled out a 70-69 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Tuesday night at the Dana Center.

A put-back by Janson with 1:34 left brought the visiting Dolphins to within one, and he had another with 35.8 on the clock to put his team in front by one. A foul was called on that one, and the miss was rebounded by Bentley sophomore guard J.P. Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA).

The Falcons got the ball to junior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS), who had already connected five times from beyond the arc. His 17th three-point attempt of the night, tying the program record, was off the mark, but freshman forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) corralled the rebound. He was swarmed by the Dolphin defense, and the final horn sounded before he could get off a shot.

Bentley was in front the majority of the night after a pair of Grassa triples produced an early 13-5 lead. After the Dolphins countered with nine in a row to go up one, the Falcons bettered that run by one to make it a 23-14 game with six minutes left in the first. Freshman guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS), who was perfect from downtown (5-for-5), connected twice from beyond the arc during that surge.

Furness' fourth trey of the first half helped Bentley enter the break up five, 36-31, and a McFarland three early in the second made it 41-33. The Falcons, who survived a first-half scoring drought of over five minutes, managed only seven points over the next nine minutes and Le Moyne took advantage, building a five-point lead, 53-48.

Bentley put together a run of its own, scoring ten unanswered over a span of 2:18 to reverse the spread 60-55 lead into the final five minutes. That stretch included threes from both Grassa and Furness.

The advantage hit six, 63-57, when McFarland drained a three with 4:22, but the visitors came right back to even the game at 63 apiece. Bentley twice regained a three-point lead in the final three minutes, with both senior guard Mike Topercer (Scottsdale, Ariz./New Hampton Prep) and Grassa burying the ball from outside. Grassa's triple with 2:06 left proved to be the Falcons' final points of the night and set the stage for Janson's late heroics.

Grassa led Bentley with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Furness, a perfect 6-of-6 overall, followed with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists off the bench. McFarland also scored in doubles, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

In addition to the game-high point total, Janson was also the top rebounder, with 10. Le Moyne freshman Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) followed with 14 points, all coming after intermission.

Both teams shot well (Le Moyne 54 percent, Bentley 49) and the Falcons had a 13-5 advantage from three-point land. However, the Falcons got to the line only three times while the Dolphins, who were only whistled for six fouls, attempted 11 and made seven.  Le Moyne finished with two more rebounds, 29-27, but only had four second-chance points before the final couple minutes.

The loss, Bentley's third at home this season by either one or two points, dropped the Falcons to 7-11 overall and 5-9 NE-10. Le Moyne evened its overall record at 9-9 and moved to 6-8 in conference play.

Bentley will look to get back on track Saturday when it plays a 3:30 game at Southern Connecticut State.
