Bloomfield Upsets AIC in NCAA East Region Quarterfinal, 100-96

WALTHAM, Mass. – The second-seeded American International College men's basketball team was upset by seventh-seeded Bloomfield College in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Division II East Region Championship Tournament 100-96 Saturday afternoon at Bentley University's Dana Center.

The Deacons (22-8) had six players scored in double-figures while shooting 52.3 percent (34-65) from the field and 40-percent (6-15) from three. They will next face third-seeded Stonehill College Sunday at 6 p.m. at Bentley.

Junior forward Matt Wafula (Harlem, N.Y.) scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and a 6-for-7 showing at the line while pulling down eight rebounds. Freshman forward Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J.) registered a double-double off the bench with 17 points and a game-high 10 boards. He was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and was 5-of-6 at the line.

Senior guard Gage Daye (Newark, N.J.) also scored 17 points and dished out six assists. Junior guard Ahmad Harris (Linden, N.J.) and senior guard Ryan Rodrigues (New Bedford, Mass.) netted 14 points each, while junior guard Art Ellis (Magnolia, N.Y.) added 11 points and seven assists.

Junior forward Isiah Wallace (Springfield, Mass.) scored a career-high 36 points on a 15-of-27 performance from the field to go with nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Yellow Jackets (20-9). He now has 1,407 career points, just four shy of matching Frank Stronczek's (1964-67) career mark of 1,411 career points.

Senior guard Allen Aragbaye (Corona, Calif.) was 11-of-19 from the field as he scored a career-high 33 points with seven boards, while sophomore guard Ricky Hudson contributed 12 points, four assists and four boards off the bench.

Bloomfield opened the game with a 9-2 run over the first 3:09 of the game, which was answered by a 19-3 AIC run that gave the Yellow Jackets a 21-12 lead five minutes later. The Deacons responded with a 15-2 first half run to take a 32-28 lead with 6:06 left in the first half and eventually took a 45-42 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Bloomfield never trailed the rest of the way and used a 10-3 run in the second to open a 14-point lead, 91-77, with 4:03 to go in the game.

AIC then scored 15 of the next 20 points in the game to pull back within four with 1:11 remaining to make it 96-92, but the Deacons went 4-for-6 at the line in the closing minute to hold on to the victory.

The Yellow Jackets shot 50-percent (36-72) from the field and 43.8 percent (7-16) from three, but shot just 63 percent (17-27 at the line. Bloomfield made 26-of-35 free throws (74.3 percent) and out-rebounded AIC 41-35.
