No. 2 West Chester Starts Fast, Downs No. 8 Bentley 5-1

WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- West Chester University, the second-ranked team in Division II, scored twice off penalty corners in the first 3:15 and went on to defeat No. 8 Bentley University, 5-1, in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.

Five different players scored for the Golden Rams with the offense led by sophomore Valerie van Kuijck (Denbosch, The Netherlands), who had a goal and two assists.

For Bentley, sophomore forward Libby Harrison (North Andover, Mass./North Andover HS) scored her first career goal and Erin McGuinness (Rutland, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS) had a busy afternoon in her first game as a collegian.

Harrison spoiled the West Chester shutout bid when she scored an unassisted goal with 79 seconds left in the game.

McGuinness, who missed last season with an injury, made 15 saves while facing a West Chester team that had erupted for ten goals in its opener against Assumption. That included nine in the first half.

West Chester's first two goals each came on deflections following penalty corners. Sophomore Morgan Becker (West Chester, Pa.) was credited with the first a minute into the game and senior Sophia Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) the second at 3:15.

Van Kuijck made it 3-0 in the 22nd minute, senior Claudia Jaszczak (Coatesville, Pa.) scored in the 53rd minute and sophomore Jasmine Miller (Millersville, Pa.) completed the scoring in the final minute.

West Chester outshot the visiting Falcons 29-3, including 16-0 in the first half, and had a 13-1 advantage in penalty corners, including 10-0 before intermission.

Bentley, 0-2, will host American International Thursday at 7 pm in the home opener.
