No. 8 Adelphi Denies Bentley, 4-3; Winer & Talerman Score for Falcons

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Bentley University senior Leah Winer (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow HS) scored the game's first goal and classmate Meghan Talerman (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable HS) netted the last one, but Adelphi University scored three in between to post a 3-2 Northeast-10 Conference field hockey win over the visiting Falcons Wednesday afternoon at Motamed Field.

Adelphi, ranked first in the NCAA Division II East Region and number eight in the NFHCA Division II national coaches poll, improved to 12-3 overall and 8-1 conference with its ninth consecutive win. Bentley dropped to 7-7 overall and 5-4 NE-10 on the season.

Winer staked Bentley to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute as she sent in a ball off a rebound, following a save by sophomore Amanda Gargiulo (Westbury, N.Y.), for her third goal of the season.

With senior Molly Cuevas (San Jose, Calif.) providing a goal and an assist for the host Panthers, the lead had been reversed less than ten minutes later. She assisted on a goal by junior Leah Pollich (Massapequa, N.Y.) in the 13th minute and scored her 11th of the year in the 17th.

Adelphi, which doubled Bentley's shot total (20-10), added an insurance goal, from sophomore Elizabeth Mercuri (Chelmsford, Mass.), with 4:57 remaining and it proved to be the game-winner as Talerman knocked in a rebound with 1:41 left for her second goal of her senior year.

Gargiulo finished with four saves while junior Evelyn Schaedel (Burlington, Vt./Burlington HS) matched her career-high with ten.

Bentley will be back at home, where it has won six of seven, Saturday morning to take on Franklin Pierce University.
