Maguire, Lirange Lead Bentley Past Stonehill in NE-10 Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior forward Beth Maguire (Medfield/Medfield HS) had a tying goal in the first half and fed sophomore Gina Lirange (Auburn/Auburn HS) on the game-winner with 8:53 left as the Bentley University field hockey team opened the Northeast-10 Conference portion of its schedule with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over visiting Stonehill College Thursday evening.

Bentley's second consecutive win (with a suspended game at Assumption in between) boosted the Falcons to 4-3 overall. Stonehill, which finished with a 12-7 edge in shots, dropped to 0-2 in the conference and 3-5 overall.

The Skyhawks struck first, successfully converting a penalty corner just 5:10 into the contest. Junior Kelsey Davis (Gardner) took the hit, senior Jessica Laurendeau (Acton) and junior Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H.) drove the ball into the cage for her seventh of the season.

Maguire, Bentley's leading scorer on the season with four goals and three assists for 11 points, answered with 12-and-a-half minutes left in the first half. She shot from the right of the net into the left corner.

Following a scramble in front of the net after a penalty corner, Maguire found Lirange open in close, and she was able to knock it in for her second goal of 2012.

Senior Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) made six saves, three in each half, to win the victory in goal for the Falcons. Sophomore Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md.) registered three saves for the Skyhawks.

Bentley is back in action Saturday, with a 1 pm contest at Adelphi University. Tuesday's game at Assumption, which was halted by a power outage with the score even at 1-1 following the first overtime, will be resumed on Sept. 28 at 5:45 pm.
