NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Junior Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee) recorded her first shutout of the season and was supported by a goal in each half as Merrimack College posted a 2-0 non-conference win over Bentley University in college field hockey action Thursday night at Warrior Field.
Bentley, ranked tenth in Division II preseason, fell to 1-3 on the season while Merrimack improved to 2-1.
Bentley was on the attack early, with three shots in the first three-and-a-half minutes. However, it was the Warriors who struck first with junior Jamie Spano (Reading) scoring at 8:26 of the first on a shot from the top of the circle.
Sophomore Jessica Otis (Pittsford, N.Y.) gave Merrimack a two-goal advantage with 22:23 remaining on a breakaway shot.
Bergquist made four saves while junior Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) had nine for Bentley, which was outshot 19-13. Merrimack also had a major advantage in penalty corners, attempting eight to the Falcons' one.
Bentley is also on the road Saturday, with a 1 pm encounter at defending Division II national champion UMass-Lowell.
