Maguire Scores Twice as Bentley Pulls Away for 1st Win of 2011

WALTHAM, Mass.  – Junior Beth Maguire (Medfield/Medfield HS), the top scorer for the Bentley University field hockey team a year ago, netted her first two goals of 2011 to help the Falcons claim win number one of the season, 5-1 over Saint Anselm College in a non-conference match at Bentley Tuesday night.

Bentley, ranked tenth in Division II preseason, dropped its first two games, both to nationally-ranked squads this past weekend, before besting the Hawks on a rainy night. Saint Anselm, outshot 20-10 in the game, dropped to 0-2.

The game was scoreless until junior Kaitlyn Marcinek (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) found the range in the 27th minute of the first half, driving the ball into the cage following a save. It remained a 1-0 game at the break, despite an 11-1 Falcon shot advantage during the first 35 minutes.

Maguire, who had 11 goals last year, made it a 2-0 game with 6:43 gone by in the second as she deflected a drive from senior Tori Bergantino (Waltham/Waltham HS) following a penalty corner.

Saint Anselm got on the board with 18:30 left, senior Sara Sterling (Mansfield) scoring after a centering pass from freshman Bridget Davis (Mansfield).

Just about a minute later, Maguire restored Bentley's two-goal advantage with her second of the night set up by senior Stephanie Sideris (Watertown/Watertown HS).

Goals by sophomores Brandy Asplundh (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Acad. of the New Church) and Samantha Boardman (Chester, Md./Kent Island HS) completed the scoring for the Falcons.  Sideris and Bergantino both had two assists for Bentley.

Junior Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) earned the win in goal for Bentley, making five saves in the process.  Megan Sullivan (Braintree), also a junior, had ten saves for the Hawks.

Bentley plays its next three on the road, beginning Thursday night at Merrimack College.
