Derek Getchell is in his third year as an assistant football coach at Bentley University following two years as an assistant football coach at Dean College. He will coach the defensive line and special teams this season after spending the last two years working with the linebackers.

Getchell’s duties at Dean included coaching the defensive backs and serving as the special teams coordinator. He led a secondary that intercepted 22 passes in 10 games in 2018 and helped the Bulldogs capture the ECFC championship in 2019.

Before joining the coaching staff at Dean, Getchell spent more than a decade as an assistant football coach at the high school level. He began his career at Franklin High School, his alma mater, from 2007-11, and later coached at Archbishop Williams High School (2013-14), Braintree High School (2015) and Attleboro High School (2016-18).

Getchell has also been a board member and guest speaker for Safe Coalition and a guest speaker and facilitator for Learn2Cope. Both organizations deal with substance abuse and addiction. In addition, he has been a community coach at Natick High School.

Getchell, who resides in his hometown of Franklin, received his Bachelor of Science degree in both special education and history from Bridgewater State University in 2019.
