Falcons set two school records, but come up short against New Haven

WALTHAM, Mass. – A couple of Falcons set school records Saturday, but the Bentley football team suffered its second consecutive one-point loss, 14-13, at home against New Haven (non-conference) Saturday night.

Mason Campbell booted a 49-yard field-goal midway through the first half, and he accounted for all of Bentley's scoring when it held a 6-0 lead.

The Chargers scored the game's first touchdown five minutes into the second quarter, and they took a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Bentley was reinvigorated when it came out of the locker room, and Tajon Vassar proved it. Vassar took the opening kick of the second half 98 yards to the house, giving Bentley a 13-7 edge. Vassar broke the previous Bentley record for longest kickoff return by one yard.

That lead, however, didn't last more than three minutes. The Chargers' ensuing drive needed just six plays before reaching the end zone.

Bentley put together a promising drive late in the fourth quarter. The Falcons' defense forced New Haven to punt, and Bentley took over on its own 31-yard line with 5:33 left in regulation.

The drive began with a 24-yard run by Mark Waid. Two plays later, Waid used his feet to gain another 13 yards and get out of bounds on Bentley's sideline.

The Falcons totaled nine yards with its next three plays, setting up a 4th-and-1 from the Chargers' 21-yard line and a little less than 1:20 on the clock.

Campbell lined up for the potential go-ahead field-goal from inside the 30-yard line, but the ball was pushed wide left.

Waid finished with a game-high 96 rushing yards, and Vinnie Holmes had 85 yards on the ground. Nayvon Reid totaled 69 yards on five catches.

The Falcons' defense held the Chargers to 0-for-13 on third-down conversions.

Bentley aims to get its first win of the season when it has its first road game of the season at Post, Sept. 16.
