AIC Stuns Bentley on Senior Day, 18-10; Waid Rushes for 131 Yards

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite Bentley University quarterback Mark Waid (Cortland, Ohio/Girard HS) running for 131 yards, the Falcons were stunned by American International College, 18-10, in Northeast-10 Conference football Saturday on the Bentley Football Field.

It was the first win of the season for the Yellow Jackets, who entered the day 0-8 overall and 0-5 conference. Bentley, which was ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II Super Region 1, dropped to 6-3 overall and 3-2 NE10.

Sophomore kicker Josh Hamel (New Hartford, Conn.) staked the visitors to a 6-0 with a pair of long field goals. He drove a 45-yarder through the uprights with 8:42 in the first half and delivered a 48-yarder 53 seconds into the second stanza.

Facing a Bentley defense that ranked number one in fewest points allowed and third in fewest yards, AIC broke two big runs in the first quarter. On a first-and-13 from the two, sophomore Sidiki Kone (Bronx, N.Y.) ran for 63 yards. Later in the quarter, grad student Chase Speller (Watertown, Conn.) had a 37-yard gain.

On its next possession after the 48-yarder, AIC added to its lead with a 48-yard pass from graduate QB Brandon Robinson (South Orange, N.J.) to classmate Clark Marchand (Beverly). The extra point attempt failed and the score remained 12-0.

Bentley finally got on the board with 4:11 remaining on the third as a four-yard TD pass from Waid to sophomore Nayvon Reid (Brockton/Brockton HS) finished a ten-play, 83-yard drive. Included were 31 yards on the ground by Waid.

A great chance for the Falcons late in third came on a blocked punt. However, the ball was touched by a Bentley player downfield and recovered by AIC.

Junior kicker Mason Campbell (Tampa, Fla./Barron Collier HS), who missed a 35-yard field goal during the first half, made it a two-point game when he delivered on a 23-yarder with 7:50 to play.

The Falcons looked like they were going to take the lead on that drive after a 19-yard gain by Waid made it first and goal from the two. After being stopped three times by the AIC defense, Bentley had to settle for a field goal after being whistled for a false start on a fourth-and-goal inside the one.

The game ended with a strip sack by grad student Ahmad Rabah (Paterson, N.J.) and a 35-yard fumble return for a touchdown by sophomore Tyson Thornton (Springfield).

Waid, in addition to gaining 131 on the ground, completed 10 of 19 passes for 106 yards. Junior Vinnie Holmes (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) ran for 76 yards and senior Noah Neville (Boston/Newton North HS) caught three passes, including the 100th of his career, for 61 yards.

Bentley outgained AIC, 351-267, but converted only three of 12 third downs.

Bentley will close out the season next Saturday at Pace University.
