Waid Throws 5 TD Passes & Lanzalotto Picks Off 2 as Bentley Soars Past Saint Anselm, 38-7

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate quarterback Mark Waid (Cortland, Ohio/Girard HS) threw five touchdown passes, including two to senior Abel Lopes Jr. (Scituate/Scituate HS), and the Falcon defense had three interceptions, including two by senior linebacker Christian Lanzalotto (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven HS), as Bentley University trounced Saint Anselm College, 38-7, in Northeast-10 Conference football Saturday afternoon at Bentley.

Waid, enjoying his best day as a Falcon, completed 13 of 20 passes for 232 yards and also ran for 59 yards on 11 carries. He distributed his passes to nine different players and four were on the receiving end of his scoring passes. In addition to Lopes Jr., they were sophomore Jonathan Oriakhi (Swampscott/Milton Academy), graduate tight end Chris Varone (Victor, N.Y./Victor HS) and sophomore Rashon Bradford (Rahway, N.J./Rahway HS).

While the offense was amassing 439 yards, the Bentley defense limited Saint Anselm – the number two scoring team in the conference – to just 181 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown. In addition to the three picks, the Falcons had three sacks and denied the Hawks on both their fourth-down conversion attempts.

The Falcons (4-2, 2-1 NE10) had four offensive plays of at least 37 yards, including a 57-yard TD pass from Waid to Oriakhi with 10:28 left to account for the only scoring of the opening quarter.

Bentley put 17 points on the board in the second quarter to take a commanding 24-0 lead intermission. Junior Mason Campbell (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) made it 10-0 with a 27-yard field goal early in the period, capping a drive that featured a 58-yard run by senior Nate Larkins (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn HS) to the Hawk 11.

Coach Alvin Reynolds' team broke the game open with two Waid TD passes in the final two-and-a-half minutes of the second. Eight snaps after sophomore Isaiah Decias (Ozone Park, N.Y./Hudson Catholic HS) gained 41 yards on a throw by Waid, the Falcon QB and Youngstown State transfer found Varone wide open in the left side of the end zone on a second-and-goal from the one, with 2:24 on the clock.

Saint Anselm's offense was denied twice after Varone made it 17-0, the second possession ending on a Lanzalotto interception and 38-yard return to the Hawk 16 with 40 seconds remaining in the half. Two plays later, Waid and Lopes Jr. teamed up on a 14-yard TD pass, extending the Falcon advantage to 24-0.

Bentley, after deferring to start the game, received the ball to start the third. The Falcons moved 70 yards in 13 plays, the last being Waid's fourth TD pass of the afternoon. This one was good for five yards to Lopes, Jr. as he scored his fourth touchdown in the last two games.

Lanzalotto's second interception of the day and a 37-yard completion to Decias set up Bentley's final touchdown. This one was a five-yarder to Bradshaw and made it 38-0 with 10:35 to play.

Bentley's bid for a second straight shutout was denied when Saint Anselm got on the board with 8:06 remaining on a 18-yard TD pass from junior Drew Willoughby (Austin, Texas) to junior Mike Tellier (Braintree).

Bentley's 207 rushing yards featured exactly 100 for Larkins, on 15 carries. Decias led the receiving corps with his two catches good for 78 yards.

For Saint Anselm (4-2, 2-2 NE10), Willoughby completed passes to 11 players and finished 22 of 44 for 185 yards.

Lanzalotto's day included five tackles, 1.5 tackles for losses and three pass break-ups. Junior linebacker Salvatore Lupoli Jr. (Chelmsford/Chelmsford HS) led the Falcons with six stops, and senior corner Jailen Branch (Randolph/Milton Academy) had his fourth interception of the season.

Bentley, which was 7-for-14 on third downs and 3-for-3 on fourth downs, held the visitors to minus-four net rushing yards and possessed the ball for 37:47.

Next Saturday, Bentley is on the road for a 1 pm matchup at Assumption University.
