Waid Throws for 3 Scores and Runs for Another as Bentley Blanks Franklin Pierce, 41-0

RINDGE, N.H. – Graduate student Mark Waid (Cortland, Ohio/Girard HS) threw three touchdown passes, including two to senior Abel Lopes Jr. (Scituate, Mass./Scituate HS), and ran for another as Bentley University blanked Franklin Pierce University, 41-0, in Northeast-10 Conference football at Sodexo Field Saturday afternoon.

While the offense was putting up over 40 for the third time this season, the defense limited Franklin Pierce to 167 yards and forced six turnovers, including two interceptions by senior corner Jailen Branch (Randolph, Mass./Milton Academy).

Waid and Lopes Jr. combined on a 39-yard scoring strike on a third-and-six play midway through the opening stanza to account for the only scoring of the first. It was one of four plays of 20 yards or more for Waid, a Youngstown State transfer, in the game.

Bentley (3-2, 1-1 NE10) added 13 points to its point total in the second quarter, including two field goals by junior Mason Campbell (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS). The first was a 32-yarder on the tenth play of a 30-yard drive and the second was a 20-yarder as part of a drive that included a pair of third-down conversions. Included was a 23-yarder to Lopes Jr. on a third-and-12.

With 42 seconds left in the half, Waid and Lopes Jr. teamed up again, this time on a 26-yard TD pass that made it a 20-0 game. Three plays earlier, Waid ran the ball 34 yards to the Raven 16.

Waid's third TD pass of the day came with 2:26 left in the third as he hit sophomore Nayvon Reid (Brockton/Brockton HS) in the corner of the endzone for an eight-yard scoring strike. The 80-yard drive, which followed a missed Franklin Pierce field goal attempt, saw Waid run for 26 yards and throw for 53.

Bentley added two touchdowns to its total in the fourth, both on one-yard runs. Waid took it in for his fourth TD of the day with 10:17 on the clock and senior Nate Larkins (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn HS) scored his fifth TD of the season with 3:40 to play.

Waid finished the day with 103 rushing yards on 16 carries through the air. He completed 10 of 22, including three to Lopes Jr. for 88 yards.

Six of Franklin Pierce's 11 possessions ended in turnovers with Bentley coming up with three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. In addition to the two picks by Branch, freshman Jevon Holley (Fall River, Mass./Durfee HS) had his first as a collegian, and seniors Jack Six (Guilford, Conn./Blair Academy) and junior Christian Lanzalotto (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven HS) both recovered fumbles.

There were also four Bentley sacks, including two from senior defensive end Cedie Dashiell II (Buena Park, Calif./Buena Park HS), one of which forced a fumble.

Campbell, in addition to the two field goals, was five-for-five on extra point kicks.

Bentley, which controlled the ball for 35 minutes, totaled 330 yards of offense with 173 on the ground and 157 through the air. The Falcons earned 20 first downs, including four that came as a result of Raven penalties, and limited Franklin Pierce (1-4, 1-2 NE10) to only nine. In conversions, coach Alvin Reynolds' team was 10 of 18 on third downs and four of five on fourth down.

Franklin Pierce's 167 yards of total offense included just 11 net rushing yards on 22 plays. The Ravens converted only 1 of 11 third downs against the Falcon D.

Bentley is back at home Saturday with a noon kickoff against Saint Anselm College.
