4 1st-Quarter Touchdowns Propel Bentley Past Post, 49-6, for 9th Straight Home Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Running back Nate Larkins (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn HS) ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns, Abel Lopes Jr. (Scituate/Scituate HS) had 100 receiving yards on only three receptions and Noah Neville (Boston/Newton North HS) caught two TD passes as the Bentley University extended its home winning streak to nine, 49-6 over Post University in non-conference football Friday night on the Bentley football field.

Bentley took charge from the start with four touchdowns in the first quarter for a 28-0 lead. The 2-1 Falcons amassed 542 yards total offense and limited the 0-3 Eagles to only 154, including a net of zero on the ground.

The opening drive encompassed six plays and 65 yards with Larkins taking the ball in from the one to finish a march that featured graduate QB Mark Waid (Cortland, Ohio/Girard HS). He ran for 19 yards on a third-and-nine and teamed up with Lopes Jr. on a 43-yard completion to the two.

Waid, before leaving the game for good late in the third quarter, completed 11 of 14 passes for 249 yards.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, it took Waid only two plays to make it a 14-0 game. The first was a 35-yarder to sophomore tight end Nayvon Reid (Brockton/Brockton HS) and the second was a 14-yarder to another tight end, junior Pat Damon (Hanover/Hanover HS). It was Damon's first career reception.

The opening stanza also featured a one-yard run for a TD by Wagner transfer Eric DeMayo (Peabody/Peabody HS) and a 31-yard scoring strike from Waid to Neville. Neville surpassed 1,500 career receiving yards while catching his 17th and 18th career TD passes.

During that dominating opening quarter, Bentley amassed 241 yards and 10 first downs while limiting the Eagles to 51 yards.

After a second quarter that saw the Falcons commit their first two turnovers of the season and yield a four-yard TD pass, Bentley scored a pair of third quarter touchdowns. Following a strip sack by senior Cedie Dashiell II (Buena Park, Calif./Buena Park HS) that was recovered by classmate Joseph Howshan (Lawrence/Central Catholic HS), Larkins broke a 35-yard run for a touchdown. On the next possession, junior Vinnie Holmes (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) finished a seven-play drive with a three-yard run into the end zone. As was the case with Damon and DeMayo, it was his first career touchdown.

In the fourth, junior Brett Pullman (Worcester/Holy Name HS) threw his first career TD pass with Neville on the receiving end of the five-yarder.

Larkins needed only 12 carries to reach the century mark in rushing, and Holmes finished with 69 yards on ten rushes. Neville had a team-best 93 yards on four receptions.

Bentley's defense amassed six sacks, including 2.5 by Trinity transfer Tommy DeMatteo (Milton/Thayer Academy) and 1.5 by Dashiell II, who now has 23.5 for his career.

Coach Alvin Reynolds' team averaged 9.3 yards per play and finished with 243 on the ground and 299 through the air.  They controlled the ball for 32:40, converted five of eight third downs and received a 7-for-7 performance on extra points from junior kicker Mason Campbell (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS).

Of Post's 154 yards of offense, 75 came on the Eagles' final possession.

Bentley will be back under the home Friday night lights next week with defending Northeast-10 champion New Haven providing the opposition.
