Bentley Hosts Stonehill Saturday, Looking to Complete Season on Winning Note

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three weeks after posting a 27-7 win over Stonehill College, the Bentley University Falcons will square off against the Skyhawks again this Saturday at home, looking to complete the season on a winning note and on the positive side of .500.

Kickoff for the 5-6 game of Northeast-10 Championship Weekend is noon with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.com.

Bentley, 5-5 overall and 5-4 in conference play, will be seeking to end a two-game slide and avoid a third straight 5-6 campaign. Stonehill, coming off a 17-10 overtime win over Pace, will make the trek to Waltham with a 4-6 record, including 4-5 NE-10.

In the Falcon win on Oct. 22, Bentley used three short scoring drives in the second quarter to open a 20-0 lead and earned the victory despite only 176 yards of total offense. A short punt and ten-yard return by senior Sam McDonald (Norfolk/King Phillip Reg. HS) led to a 33-yard drive that featured a 27-yard pass from junior Mack Lowrie (Foxborough/Roxbury Latin HS) to sophomore Michael Correia (Fall River/Durfee HS) for the game's opening TD.

A couple minutes later, a two-play, five-yard scoring drive followed a 47-yard interception return by senior corner Lamar Hardy (Centreville, Va./Westfield HS). The third touchdown saw the Falcons take possession at the Stonehill eight after a blocked punt and a personal foul penalty.

Bentley added to its lead in the third with Lowrie's third TD pass of the afternoon accounting for the final score.

Stonehill had the edge statistically (19-10 first downs, 272-176 total yardage, 34:59 possession time), but the Falcons took advantage of three interceptions, the blocked punt and 103 penalty yards on the visitors to gain the win.

While Bentley took advantage of a short field against Stonehill, it's been the opposite the last two weeks as the Falcons have fallen at Southern Connecticut (35-13) and New Haven (17-7). The Owls twice scored on short fields, capitalizing on a fumbled opening kickoff and a blocked punt, and the Falcons twice fumbled at the New Haven 16 Saturday. They came up with a stop on the first one, but the second, on a punt return early in the third, led to a TD that broke a 7-all tie.

The New Haven game marked the third time in the last five weeks that Bentley has been held to single digits in the scoring column, as well as the sixth straight time they've had less than 250 yards of total offense. The Falcons had a season-high four turnovers and for the first time in 41 games, didn't force any.

Lowrie, due to start his fifth game of the season Saturday, has completed 51 percent of his 129 passes for 622 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Sophomore Drew Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy) leads the team in receiving (55 for 516) and sophomore Eric Sugarman (Fuquay Varina, N.C./Fuquay Varina HS) has been the principle ball carrier the last two week with 26 carries for 93 yards.

Freshman placekicker Grant Buchanan (Holliston/Holliston HS) is Bentley's top scorer this season with 47 points, and senior running back Matt Montalto (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) has a team-best five touchdowns and 270 rushing yards, along with a 25.9 kickoff return average. Senior Tyler Ford (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan HS) has been one of the nation's best in punting and is on pace to break the Bentley single season record for the third straight year with his average currently 44.2.

Among the many Falcons who'll be playing their final game on Saturday are three of the five starters on the offensive line and five starters on defense.

Left tackle Eric Beckwith (North Attleboro/North Attleboro HS), guard/center Matt Biscardi (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's HS) and right guard Ryan Anger (Worcester/St John's HS) have been fixtures on the line for several years, having combined for 107 career starts.

Defensively, linebackers Bryan Hardy (Barnstable/Barnstable HS) and Jack Sarnoski (Lancaster/ Nashoba Reg. HS), McDonald, Lamar Hardy and defensive end Phil Rigoglioso (Ridgewood, N.J./Bergen Catholic HS) are expected to start for the final time. Bryan Hardy leads the Northeast-10 in tackles (110, including 10 for losses) and McDonald's 17 career interceptions put him one shy of the school record.

The Stonehill offense features the passing duo of six-foot-seven junior quarterback Matt Foltz and freshman receiver Andrew Jamiel, who leads Division II with an average of 9.6 catches per game and with 86 total catches, is seven shy of the Division II freshman record. The Falcons kept him in check in the earlier meeting, with only two receptions for eight yards. However, junior Kevin Dick picked up the slack with 11 receptions for 96 yards.

Foltz, who was 21 of 38 for 173 in the first match-up, is second in the NE-10 with a .634 completion percentage and has thrown for 2,058 yards and 11 scores.

Linebacker Ryan Doherty and strong safety Nick Bona both have 71 tackles for Stonehill, which has blocked seven kicks this season, tied for the fourth most in Division II.

Bentley's win over the Skyhawks snapped a three-game slide in a series the Falcons lead 22-8-1 all-time.
