No. 22 Assumption Strikes Early in 42-7 Win over Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – After not allowing a first-quarter point in the season's first five games, Bentley University gave up three touchdowns in the opening stanza and went on to drop a 42-7 decision to Assumption College, the number 22-ranked team in Division II, in Northeast-10 Conference football Friday night at Bentley.

Junior tailback Dylan Oxsen (Plymouth) scored three touchdowns to lead Assumption, which opened a 35-0 lead before six minutes had elapsed in the second quarter.

It took the Greyhounds (5-1, 4-1 NE-10) only 18 seconds to end the Falcons' first-quarter streak. Senior Charles Reid (Westampton, N.Y.) returned the opening kickoff from his one-yard line to the Falcons' one, and Oxsen took it in on the game's first play from scrimmage for a quick 7-0 lead.

On its next possession, Assumption moved 83 yards on 12 plays with a two-yard pass from junior Mark Monks (Annandale, N.J.) to classmate Ashton Grant (Manchester, Conn.) finishing the drive and making it 14-0.

The visitors reached the end zone on their next two possessions as well. Monks ran for a one-yard touchdown with 1:30 remaining in the first, and four plays after a Bentley fumble, Monks and Oxsen teamed up on a 12-yard scoring pass to open the second quarter.

Assumption made it 35-0 after a blocked punt by senior Andrew Benson (East Bridgewater) gave the Hounds the ball on the Bentley two. Oxsen ran it in on the next play, giving the defending conference champions a commanding lead.

Bentley's only touchdown of the game came with 1:52 left in the first half, a seven-yard run by senior running back Matt Montalto (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) that capped an 11-play, 61-yard drive that included three of the Falcons' five first-half first downs.

The only scoring of the second half came with 9:06 left in the fourth when Benson returned a Falcon interception 30 yards for the touchdown. It was the first defensive TD in the NE-10 this season not scored by Bentley, which has three.

Bentley extended its streak of consecutive games with two or more takeaways to 13 as senior linebacker Bryan Hardy (Barnstable/Barnstable HS) intercepted a pass late in the first half and senior defensive lineman Keith Ducharme (Quinebaug, Conn./Pomfret School) recovered a fumble in the fourth. Hardy once again led the Falcons in tackles, making a dozen.

Assumption outgained the Falcons 378-122 and had a 20-7 advantage in first downs. The Greyhounds converted 11 of 17 third downs and forced three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble). Bentley, on the other hand, had just 75 rushing yards and 47 through the air.

Montalto amassed 195 all-purpose yards for Bentley as he rushed for 52 and returned four kickoffs for 142 yards. Sophomore running back Eric Sugarman (Fuquay Varina, N.C./Fuquay Varina HS) followed with 31 rushing yards (nine carries) and two catches for 18 yards.

Monks completed 20 of 31 passes for 197 yards with Oxsen one of his premier threats. He carried the ball 21 times for 70 yards and caught four balls for 47.

Bentley (3-3, 3-2 NE-10) will look to bounce back next Saturday when it visits American International.
