Guadagnoli Named 2014 Recipient of the Agganis/Zinman Award by NEFW
WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University quarterback Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/ Framinghan HS) has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Harry Agganis/Harold Zinman Award, presented annually by the New England Football Writers to the outstanding senior football player in New England.
Guadagnoli, a May 2014 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Bentley who broke the school record for passing yards in a season for the second straight year, will receive the prestigious award on Thursday, Dec. 11 when the NEFW holds its annual Captains and Award Banquet at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham.
It's the third major award that Guadagnoli has received since completing his career last month. He was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Year in the Northeast-10 Conference and was announced as the 2014 recipient of the Swede Nelson Award, given by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston for outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, sportsmanship and citizenship.
The Agganis/Zinman Award dates back to 1966 and Guadagnoli is just the fourth non-Division I student-athlete to be selected for the honor, joining a short list that includes another former Bentley quarterback, Marc Eddy (2004).
"Danny not only had an impressive senior season, but an extremely impressive career at Bentley, both athletically and academically," praised Falcon head coach Bill Kavanaugh. "He's become the ideal role model for young student-athletes by striving to be the best on the field and in the classroom."
Guadagnoli has done exactly that since his arrival on campus in 2010. The two-year team captain and three-year starter amassed a 3.74 grade point average as an economics-finance major and is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in finance. He's been on the Academic All-Northeast-10 team twice and should receive that honor again when this year's team is selected.
This past season, Guadagnoli threw for 3,438 yards, surpassing the school record of 3,310 he set in 2013. He passed for 31 touchdowns, including five against New Haven and four on three other occasions, while helping Bentley to a 5-6 record, including four wins in the final five games.
On Bentley's all-time lists, Guadagnoli ranks second to Eddy in most categories, with his final totals including 9,170 passing yards, 69 TD passes, 671 completions and 9,697 yards total offense. During his 32 starts, he threw for multiple TDs 22 times, including 15 games with three or more.
"Danny is an excellent football player who will go on to do great things upon graduation," said Kavanaugh of his on-the-field leader.
Guadagnoli joins a distinguished list of past Agganis/Zinman Award recipients, one that includes such luminaries as Matt Ryan (BC), Gordie Lockbaum (Holy Cross), Doug Flutie (BC), Dan Ross (Northeastern), Dick Jauron (Yale), Bruce Taylor (Boston University) and 2013 honoree Andre Williams (BC).
