Following Win over Southern Connecticut, Bentley Will Seek No. 6 on New Haven's Blue Turf

WALTHAM, Mass. – With Northeast-10 Championship Weekend only a week away, only two teams have their seeding determined.  The Bentley University Falcons will be the sixth seed while the three-time defending champion University of New Haven Chargers will be number three.

And those two teams will square off this Saturday on New Haven's famed blue turf, with kickoff now set for 12 noon after being changed from 1 pm earlier this week.

Bentley, which improved to 5-4 overall this past Saturday with a 24-19 Senior Day win over Southern Connecticut State, will look to end a three-game series losing streak to New Haven while handing the Chargers their third straight home loss. UNH, 6-3 overall, had won 22 consecutive games against NE-10 opponents before falling to Stonehill, 29-26, on Oct. 19 and American International, 43-34, last Saturday. Not surprisingly, those two will play in the conference championship game Nov. 16.

Offensively, Bentley features the duo of senior quarterback Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/ Framingham HS) and junior wide receiver Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS), a tandem that has been clicking on all cylinders in recent weeks. Guadagnoli, who had his fourth 300-yard passing game of the season in the Southern game, has averaged 322 yards through the air over the last four weeks, with nine touchdowns and only one interception during that stretch.

Seven of those scoring strikes have gone to Hill, who'll be looking for his fifth straight 100-yard receiving game. Over the last four games, he's averaged 7.5 catches and 144 receiving yards, numbers that have vaulted him up Bentley's all-time lists.

In Saturday's win over Southern, Guadagnoli had a hand in all three Bentley touchdowns, connecting with Hill on TD passes of 73 and 21 yards and running for the other. He finished 22 of 34 for 337 yards, and Hill tied his career-best with nine receptions, good for 178 yards.

Guadagnoli became only the third QB in program history to record a 2,500-yard passing season, joining Ted Larkin (1999) and Marc Eddy (2003, 2004), and Hill moved to third on Bentley's career receiving yard list with 2,090.

Each can achieve another notable milestone while at New Haven. Guadagnoli is 40 shy of 5,000 career passing yards and Hill is 61 away from a 1,000-yard receiving season, Bentley's first since John Studley in 2008.

Two Bentley freshmen received accolades from the Northeast-10 for their efforts in Saturday's game with Sam McDonald (Norfolk/King Phillip Reg. HS) the NE-10 Defensive Player of the Week and Tyler Ford (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan HS) the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week. McDonald had two interceptions against the Owls, the first to end a drive deep in Bentley territory in the third quarter and the second with 2:17 to lock up the win. Ford continued his string of impressive punting, averaging 43.8 yards on five punts.

Junior safety Nick McCarthy (Winthrop/Winthrop HS) had a career-best 12 tackles in the game and now has a team-best 68 for the season.

New Haven, behind quarterback Ronnie Nelson, has had no trouble scoring this season, putting up better than 40 points a game but has been vulnerable defensively, giving up 425.7 yards and 27.3 points a game. The latter mark is the fourth highest in the conference with only Merrimack (32.2), Saint Anselm (45.8) and Pace (52.0) allowing more.

Nelson is a two-way threat for the Chargers and as a result, his team is third in the Northeast-10 in rushing offense (190.4). That's not a good sign for the Falcons, who have given up at least 230 on the ground each of the last three weeks.

Nelson is third in the NE-10 in total offense, amassing just a shade under 320 a game. He's rushed for 545 yards (second most by a QB in the conference) and eight touchdowns and has an outstanding TD/interception ratio of 25 to 6. He's completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,332 yards, and leads the conference in yards per completion at 16.4.

Tailback Mike DeCaro has had an outstanding senior year for New Haven, amassing 199.6 all-purpose running yards a game. He's rushed for 692 yards and eight TDs, caught 22 passes for 346 yards and has accumulated 758 return yards, with his kickoff return average of 28.7 a conference best.

New Haven leads the Northeast-10 in sacks with 22, including 4.5 apiece by 275-pound Sean Berglund and 295-pound Alex Dyer. On the other hand, Charger opponents have completed 64 percent of their pass attempts, resulting in 277 passing yards a game.

Bentley will be seeking its first win over the Chargers since 2009 when the Falcons prevailed 23-15 in the first-ever meeting between the two. The last three have all gone down to the wire with UNH surviving by five, seven and four points.

In last year's game, New Haven took advantage of a missed extra point by Bentley midway through the fourth and a late field goal to survive 17-13 in a defensive struggle (only 487 yards total offense combined). Guadagnoli threw for 199 and two scores while the Chargers rushed for 174 yards.

Next Saturday, during the NE-10 Championship Weekend, Bentley will host the winner of this week's Saint Anselm-Pace game at 12 noon.
