Assumption Takes Advantage of Turnovers to Upend Bentley, 20-14

WALTHAM, Mass. – Assumption College took advantage of Bentley University's third and fourth turnovers of the game to score ten unanswered second-half points and upend the Falcons, 20-14, in Northeast-10 Conference football Friday night at Bentley.

The victory in the 2013 conference opener was just the second for the Hounds over the Falcons in 27 varsity meetings and left both clubs with 1-1 overall records.

Senior quarterback Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn.) threw two touchdown passes for Assumption, including a 42-yarder to junior Eddy Frazier (Worcester) with 38 seconds left in the third quarter. That turned a one-point Falcon lead into a six-point Greyhound advantage and Assumption limited the home team to 60 yards over the final 15 minutes to lock up the victory.

Bentley senior quarterback Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/Framingham HS) also threw a pair of touchdown passes, both coming in the second quarter as the Falcons opened a 14-7 lead.

Mistakes were costly for the Falcons throughout. They lost fumbles on kickoff returns early in both the first and third quarters, and also had two interceptions, three shanked punts, a blocked field goal and 66 penalty yards.

Within four at the half on a 34-yard field goal by senior Tad Beuchert (Danvers) on the final play before intermission, Assumption got the ball right back at the start of the second when freshman Nick Valenti (Troy, N.Y.) recovered a fumble on the kickoff return at the Bentley 23. The Falcon D held, but Beuchert connected on his second field goal of the night, this one from 39, to bring his team within one at 14-13.

Later in the third, an interception of Falcon back-up quarterback Matt Montalto (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) by Assumption sophomore Kevin O'Connor (Leominster) gave the Hounds the ball on the Falcon 42. Following an incomplete on first down, Jordan went deep to Frazier for what proved to be the winning score.

On its next possession, Bentley drove to the Assumption 13 but settled for a field goal attempt after a costly holding penalty on second down. Guadagnoli scrambled for five yards on third down, but a 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked by sophomore Kevon Lumsden (Englewood, N.J.).

Bentley had the ball two more times, but managed only one more first down and didn't penetrate the Assumption 40.

Assumption had no trouble moving the ball on the game's first possession, marching 81 yards in nine plays to take a quick 7-0 lead. Senior Neil Harrington (Bridgewater) scored the TD, on an 11-yard aerial from Jordan.

The Hounds reclaimed the ball when the kickoff was fumbled, but after a defensive stop by the Falcons, Beuchert's 41-yard field goal attempt missed wide.

Bentley evened things up with 9:12 left in the second, using a 13-play, 92-yard drive. Sophomore Chris Calvanese (Norfolk/Xaverian Bros. HS) caught his first career TD pass, on a third-and-two from the three.

With under two minutes left in the half, Guadagnoli teamed up with sophomore Chris Walsh (Attleboro/Attleboro HS) on a 15-yard TD pass, Walsh making a nice one-handed grab for his first career touchdown and a 14-7 lead.

The unusually large number of mistakes offset Bentley's statistical advantage, including 20-15 first downs, 352-295 total offense and 31:45 in possession time.

Guadagnoli, who eclipsed 3,000 yards of career total offense, finished 21 of 36 for 259 yards and also ran for a team-best 46 yards on nine carries. He distributed the ball to seven different receivers, with junior Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) catching five for 76 yards and Walsh following with four for 62.

Jordan was 14 of 31 overall for 183 yards, but was the director of an offense that didn't commit a turnover.

Bentley's defense included nine tackles and 1.5 sacks from senior linebacker Taylor Tavarozzi (Berlin, Conn./Berlin HS).

Bentley will look to bounce back next Friday night when it completes a season-opening three-game homestand against LIU Post.
