Johnson Named Inaugural Recipient of Jack Daly Award

WALTHAM, Mass. – Former Bentley University quarterback Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS) has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Jack Daly Award for Academics, Citizenship and Football  by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

Johnson, a grad student, will receive the honor May 14 when the organization holds its annual awards night at Lombardo's function facility in Randolph.

Beginning this year, the award is being presented annually to a college football player at an institution in the Chapter footprint based on academic performance, community service and demonstrated football ability.

Mr. Daly was a co-founder of the Eastern Massachusetts chapter of the National Football Foundation, an All-New England center at Williams College, a respected football official who whose assignments included the Sugar Bowl and the legendary 1968 tie game between Harvard and Yale, and a noted raconteur.

Currently a grad student, Johnson graduated in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accountancy and is currently working on his MBA with a dual focus in accountancy and financial planning.  He's a three-time Academic All-Northeast-10 selection and was the 2011 college division recipient of the Swede Nelson Award, presented for academic and athletic excellence by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.

Johnson, now a member of the regionally-ranked Bentley baseball team, had an outstanding football career for Bentley as a three-year starting quarterback. He is the only three-year captain in the program's history and directed the Falcons to a 19-10 record. He finished his career ranking in the top three in all Bentley passing categories, with his totals including 7,473 passing yards, 66 touchdown passes, 8,169 yards total offense and a school record .611 completion percentage.

Last fall, Johnson completed 66 percent of his passes with 2,418 yards, 26 touchdowns and only six interceptions.  He also was second on the team in rushing with 325 yards and three TDs.

His list of accolades includes second-team All-Northeast-10 in 2011 and Northeast-10 MVP in 2010.

Johnson has been an active member of Bentley's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, has volunteered with Special Olympics and Pop Warner, and has also worked with children as part of the 2+2=5 program at the Stanley Elementary School.
