Rizzuto hits grand slam during 11-8 win at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – Steve Rizzuto crushed a grand slam, and Nick Pappas drove in five runs in a game, as the Bentley baseball team split a Northeast-10 doubleheader at Assumption Tuesday afternoon.

Bentley 11, Assumption 8

The Falcons opened the game by scoring six unanswered runs en route to an 11-8 victory in the first game against Assumption.

Bentley's first three batters of the game reached base, paving the way for Rizzuto's grand slam. Cory Bright began the rally with a leadoff walk, and Tim Zupkus followed with an infield single. A single by Brendan Sencaj loaded the bases, and Rizzuto took care of the rest.

For Rizzuto, it was his fourth home run of the season, and the single swing pushed his RBI total to 38 for the season.

The Falcons again loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning. A single by Joe Cacciatore and a pair of Greyhounds errors put three runners on for Bentley. Sencaj hit an RBI single, and Bright came in to score on a balk.

Assumption rallied back and tied the game, 6-6, after five innings. The Falcons took a one-run lead in the top of the sixth when a Zupkus single allowed Cacciatore to easily score from third base. However, Assumption answered right back with a run in the bottom of the frame.

The Bentley bats kept mashing in the seventh inning. Rizzuto clubbed a double, and he came in to score on a triple by Tyler Gonzalez. A wild pitch allowed Gonzalez to score, giving the Falcons an 8-6 edge.

Assumption got a run back in the eighth inning, but two runs by Bentley in the ninth inning put the game out of reach. Pappas hit an RBI single in the final stanza, and Cacciatore added an RBI double.

Rizzuto finished the game leading all players in hits (3) and RBI (4). Zupkus, Sencaj, Gonalez, and Cacciatore each finished with a pair of hits.

Connor Gileau earned the win after working 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, and Gabe White pitched a hitless ninth inning to get the save.

Bentley 9, Assumption 14

Rizzuto homered for the second time in the day, and Pappas belted his second home run of the season, but the Bentley baseball lost the second game at Assumption, 14-9.

Rizzuto belted a two-run homer as part of a six-run fourth inning for the Falcons. Zupkus started the rally with a leadoff single, and he came in to score on Rizzuto's round-tripper.

The rally continued with three consecutive singles by Gonzalez, Eddy Beauregard, and Jackson Walonis. A wild pitch allowed Gonzalez to score. Cacciatore then drew a walk to re-load the bases. Pappas didn't disappoint in the moment, driving in three runs with a base hit that increased the lead to 6-1.

Assumption cut the Falcons' advantage to one, 6-5, in the bottom of the fourth.

Gonzalez hit an RBI single in the fifth inning, but the Greyhounds posted four runs in the sixth inning, and five more in the eighth.

Pappas finished the game 2-for-4 with five RBI, while Gonzalez and Beauregard finished with three-hit performances.

Bentley's road stretch continues with a conference doubleheader at Southern Connecticut Saturday, April 20, staring at 12 p.m.
