Heber takes no-hit bid into the eighth inning; Rizzuto homers against Pace

WALTHAM, Mass. – Pat Heber took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and Steve Rizzuto blasted a two-run home run to lead the Bentley baseball team to two wins over Pace Saturday afternoon.

Bentley 10, Pace 2

After a precarious first inning, Heber had it all going as the Falcons won the first game against Pace, 10-2.

An error, two passed balls, and a walk allowed the Setters to take a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, but Heber was unphased by it all. The sophomore held Pace hitless entering the eighth inning. The Setters broke up Heber's historic bid via an infield single with one out in the eighth.

Nick Pappas went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in five runs. Tyler Gonzalez scored three runs after hitting 2-for-4, and Cory Bright drove in three runs.

Bentley's bats wasted little time in overwhelming a Pace pitching staff that entered the weekend with the best ERA in the Northeast-10. Rizzuto led off the second inning with a double, and Eddy Beauregard followed by drawing a walk. A passed ball allowed both Falcons to move up a base, and Pappas scored Rizzuto with a single to center field.

Bentley loaded the bases when Brian Lindsey drew a walk, and Bright was hit by a pitch to force in Beauregard.

The Falcons carried that 2-1 lead into the third inning, where it erupted for five runs. The big rally included a two-run double by Pappas, a two-run single by Bright, and an RBI single by Lindsay.

Pappas stayed hot the very next inning, clubbing a two-run triple that pushed Bentley's lead to 9-1.

Bentley 2, Pace 0 (7 inn.)

Rizzuto crushed a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and that was all the offense the Bentley pitching staff needed for a 2-0 win over Pace.

Matt Tyman got the start on the hill for Bentley, and the southpaw allowed only three hits while striking out five through five shutout innings. Jayden Longdin shut the door on the Pace to earn a two-inning save while recording four strikeouts in the process.

Tim Zupkus drew a one-out walk in the fifth inning, which set up Rizzuto's bomb to straight-away center field. It was Rizzuto's third home run of the season, and his team-leading 31st and 32nd RBI of the season.

Bentley's 2-0 lead was in jeopardy in the top of the seventh inning. The Setters began the inning with consecutive singles, and then an error allowed Pace to have the bases loaded with nobody out.

Longdin remained composed. He got the first out via a swinging strikeout, and then he forced the next batter to pop up in the infield. Longdin ended the game with another swinging strikeout.

Bentley is back home Sunday, April 14, to host Adelphi for a doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m.
