Falcon baseball makes 2024 Waltham debut against St. Michael's this weekend

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley baseball team hosts its first Waltham games of 2024 when St. Michael's comes to town, March 2-3. The non-conference doubleheaders for both Saturday and Sunday will be played at Waltham High School's Yetten Field. Live stream will not be available this weekend.

 

Lookin' up in the South

The Falcons won all four games during their trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. this past weekend (Feb. 23-25). Bentley scored 53 runs, belted 11 home runs, and hit .368 as a team. The wins were against St. Thomas Aquinas (7-4), Bridgeport (17-9; 11-5), and Mercy (18-2).

 

All Bright, All Bright

Cory Bright was named the Northeast-10 Player of the Week following Bentley's 4-0 trip in South Carolina. Bright scored seven of Bentley's 53 runs on the weekend, and he knocked in five more. Overall, the Melrose, Mass. native hit .429 (6-for-14) and drew four walks between the four wins. Bright homered twice in the latter end of a doubleheader against Bridgeport (Feb. 24). They were the first two home runs of his Bentley career. Bright is hitting .458 so far this season.

 

On the hunt

After redshirting last year, Hunter Smith is off to a great start to collegiate career. Through seven games this season, the Ladera Ranch, Calif. native is hitting .300 with a .984 OPS. Smith homered twice in a win over Bridgeport (Feb. 24), one of which was a grand slam. Smith also has a team-high three steals entering this weekend.

 

Going big

Jackson Walonis has three multi-hit games this season, including three-hit efforts against both Bridgeport and Mercy. His .429 batting average ranks second on the team (Min. 15 AB).

 

Stone cold

Steve Hardiman has allowed only one earned run through 10 innings so far this season. He has two appearances (one start) on the hill. During that span, Hardiman has struck out eight batters.

 

Spark from the 'pen

Both of Harper Flint's appearances this season have come out of the bullpen. He hasn't allowed a run through five innings this season, striking out five and yielding just two hits without a walk.

 

Scouting St. Michael's (0-2)

The Purple Knights' only two games so far this season came in a doubleheader against St. Anselm (Feb. 25). St. Michael's mustered three extra-base hits between the two losses. The team wasn't shy about running – attempting five steals, and successfully swiping three bags. Defensively, the Purple Knights totaled five errors against St. Anselm
