Following Game 1 Loss, Bentley Closes Out Regular Season with 19-7 Game 2 Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBI, two doubles and a home run as Bentley University closed out the regular season and celebrated Senior Day with a 19-7 game two victory over St. Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Saturday afternoon on DeFelice Field.

St. Michael's came from behind in the opener, scoring seven times in the top of the seventh to win 8-4.

Bentley, which received 20 hits from 11 different players in the nightcap, closed out the regular season at 22-20 overall and 11-13 NE10. The Falcons finished fourth in the conference's Northeast Division and will play at top-seeded Southern New Hampshire Tuesday in the first round of the NE10 playoffs.

Down 3-2 midway through the second of game two, Bentley took control with a six-run inning. Senior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) had an RBI single to tie the game and Sears drove in the go-ahead run with a double to right. The inning continued with a sacrifice flies by sophomore left fielder Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS) and senior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS) and a two-run double to right center by junior center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington/Lexington HS).

Bentley build on its lead with one in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the seventh and five in the eighth. The fifth included homers by Sears, his sixth, and senior DH Eddy Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS), his eighth. Freshman left fielder Damon Alexander (Allton/Boston Latin School) had a two-run double, his first career hit, in the eighth.

In addition to the nine total base performance by Sears, Bentley's offense included three hits and three runs scored by Zupkus. Rizzuto, junior infielder Tyler Gonzalez (Windham, N.H./Lawrence Academy), Beauregard and sophomore catcher Patrick Purcell (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central HS).

Sophomore right-hander Marc Cedrone (Walpole/Xaverian Bros. HS) improved to 3-0 despite allowing nine hits and four runs in his six innings of work.

St. Michael's, which finished its season at 5-30 overall and 5-19 conference, erupted for seven in the final frame of the seven-inning opener with the inning including four hits, four walks, a hit batter and three errors. A bases-loaded walk forced in the tying run and senior left fielder Anthony Santosuosso (Arlington) scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. A two-run single by sophomore first baseman Max Kolifarth (Millbury) helped to break the game open.

Bentley's seven hits included two from freshman shortstop Tommy Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Plant HS).
