Two-Run HR by Beauregard in 8th Lifts Bentley Past Saint Anselm, 9-8

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior DH Eddy Beauregard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS), playing in his first game in 20 days, slugged a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to lift Bentley University to a 9-8 win over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Thursday at Sullivan Park.

The win propelled the Falcons into a tie for fourth with the Hawks as the two teams battle for the final playoff position in the conference's Northeast Division. Both are 6-11 NE10 with seven games left, including three more against each other.

After a seventh-inning, three-run home run by senior shortstop Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) capped a comeback from a 7-2 deficit by Saint Anselm (10-29), Bentley (17-18) responded in the top of the eighth. Senior catcher Brian Lindsay (New Durham, N.H./Kingswood Reg HS) led off with a walk and after a pitching change, Beauregard greeted graduate righty Shawn  Morrow (Melrose, Mass.) with a two-run homer to left. It was the sixth of the year for Beauregard who had missed the previous ten games with an injury.

The rest of Bentley's scoring came in the fifth when the Falcons erupted for seven runs after two were out to erase a 2-0 deficit. Freshman shortstop Tommy Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Plant HS) had an RBI single, graduate first baseman Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and sophomore left fielder Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS) put Bentley in front 4-2 with a two-run double to left center.

The inning continued with a two-run single to left center by senior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) and an RBI single by Lindsay, his second hit of the inning.

It was the Falcons' second big inning of the week. On Tuesday, Bentley scored ten in the seventh to defeat Saint Rose, 15-3.

Freshman Steve Hardiman (North Massapequa, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS) pitched the final two innings to save the game for sophomore Harper Flint (Sunapee, N.H./Sunapee HS). Hardiman had one walk and two strikeouts with the save his third.

Bolton and Sears each extended their streaks of consecutive games reaching base to 20, and both Bolton and senior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) each stretched their hitting streak to nine.

The series continues Friday with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 12 noon.
