Top of the Order Helps Bentley Win at AIC, 12-5

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The top three in the Falcon lineup combined for seven hits, five RBI and four runs scored as Bentley University won at American International College, 12-5, in non-conference baseball Wednesday at Bedard Field.

Graduate second baseman Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) finished with three RBI, freshman shortstop Tommy Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Plant HS) was four-for-five with two runs scored and graduate first baseman Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) had two hits and two RBI.

Bentley, which amassed 12 hits, 13 walks and two hit batters off seven Yellow Jacket pitchers, scored in six different innings while improving to 14-16 overall. That was plenty of support for sophomore righty Marc Cedrone (Walpole/Xaverian Bros. HS), who pitched six quality innings in his first start of the year. He allowed six hits and two runs while striking out five.

Cedrone had a 1-0 lead before throwing his first pitch. Bolton singled to left center and scored on Sears' double to left.

Bentley made it a 3-0 game in the top of the second. Following a walk, a single and a balk, Halloran delivered a two-run single to left.

After AIC (15-17) scored twice in the bottom of the second, the Falcons got them back in the top of the third. Both scored when the AIC catcher, after a dropped third strike, threw the ball away with sophomore left fielder Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS) coming in from third and senior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS) from second.

Junior center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington/Lexington HS) had the first of three Bentley sacrifice flies in the fifth, making it 6-2. A three-run seventh including a sac fly from Sears and DeMartinis III had one during a three-run ninth.

Bentley's final run came on a Sears steal of home in the ninth.

Bolton, with his four hits, moved into a tie for the team-lead in batting average at .365. Sears, senior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) and senior DH Cory Bright (Melrose/Bishop Fenwick HS) each had two hits for the Falcons.

Bentley will play a three-game series at Adelphi this weekend, beginning with a 3 pm game on Friday.
