Bentley Swept by Southern New Hampshire, 16-4 & 7-6; Zupkus & Sears Homer

MANCHESTER, N.H. – An RBI double to right center by junior first baseman Mike LaRocca (Vero Beach, Fla.) with no outs in the ninth inning gave Southern New Hampshire University a 7-6 win game two win, its second walk-off in as many days and a sweep of its Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader with Bentley University on Penmen Field Saturday. The game was scheduled to be seven innings.

In the opener, SNHU went deep five times, including twice by sophomore right fielder Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.), to prevail 16-4.

SNHU, ranked 23rd in Division II, ran its winning streak to 17 and remained unbeaten in conference play (28-8, 15-0 NE10).

Bentley received home runs from senior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) in the opener and graduate DH Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) in game two.

In the ninth of game two, Moreno drew a leadoff walk and scored on LaRocca's two-bagger.

With the game tied at 3-3, Bentley struck for three runs in the top of the sixth. Senior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) and Zupkus opened the inning with singles, forcing a pitching change. After a balk put both in scoring position, senior catcher Brian Lindsay (New Durham, N.H./Kingswood Reg. HS) doubled to left, driving in Rizzuto.

An RBI double by freshman shortstop Tommy Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Plant HS) brought in Zupkus and a sacrifice fly from junior center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington, Mass./Lexington HS) scored Lindsay with the third run of the inning.

It didn't take the Penmen long to answer as a three-run homer by junior third baseman Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) in the bottom of the frame made it 6-6.

Bentley's ten hits included two, along with two RBI, from Sears. His two-out home run in the fifth created the 3-3 tie. Rizzuto and Bolton also had two hits.

Southern New Hampshire homered five times in the opener, including the two from Moreno. The other Penmen to go deep were junior DH Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y), junior left fielder Cam Caraher (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore center fielder Harry Vargas Segura (Bronx, N.Y.).

The Penmen scored in each of their six at-bats, including six runs in the second to go up 8-1. That inning included a three-run blast by Morano and a two-run shot by Caraher, with both going to left center.

Zupkus, who homered in the second, was the only Falcon with more than one hit as he finished two-for-three.

Bentley (13-15, 5-10 NE10) will look to end the SNHU winning streak when the two clubs wrap up the series with a 1 pm game on Penman Field Sunday.
