Assumption Spoils Bentley’s Comeback with Walk-off Homer

WORCESTER, Mass. – A two-out two-run walk-off home run by graduate first baseman Cole Durkan (Worcester) gave Assumption University a 7-6 win over Bentley University Monday afternoon at Rocheleau Field and a split of their four-game Northeast-10 Conference series.

Durkan's walk-off spoiled a Bentley comeback that saw the Falcons erase a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead. Four of the runs were scored in the top of the ninth, including two on the conference-leading eighth home run of the year by sophomore left fielder Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS).

Bentley began its comeback in the sixth when DeMartinis III walked and scored on a double to left by junior second baseman Jackson Walonis (Walpole/Walpole HS). In the seventh, freshman shortstop Tommy Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Henry B. Platt HS) produced the Falcons' second run with an RBI single to center.

A walk and an error gave Bentley two baserunners in the ninth. Graduate left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) made it a one-run game on a two-run double to right center. With two down in the inning, DeMartinis III did more than keep the Falcons alive, he drove the ball over the right field fence for the 6-5 lead.

With two outs in the ninth and a runner on first following a walk, Durkan delivered his game-winning blast.

Bentley finished with eight hits, including two from junior center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington/Lexington HS).

Assumption outhit the Falcons by one, with junior left fielder Jared Berardino (Rowley) 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Bentley dropped to 10-7 overall, Assumption improved to 7-14 and both clubs are 2-2 in conference action.

The Falcons will host American International in a four-game series this weekend, beginning Friday at 3:30 pm.
