DeMartinis III, Beauregard & Heber Help Bentley Sweep Assumption, 14-2 & 5-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore left fielder Stan DeMartinis III (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage HS), senior Ed Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS) and freshman lefty Pat Heber (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS) each played key roles as Bentley University swept Assumption University, 14-2 and 5-4, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

DeMartinis III homered in each game, his conference-leading sixth and seventh of the year, and finished the day with five runs scored, five RBI and four hits. Beauregard, after scoring twice and driving in two in the opener, earned the win on the mound in game two. Heber struck out 12 in game one with a complete-game four-hitter.

The sweep boosted Bentley to 10-6 overall and 2-1 NE10. Assumption dropped to 6-14, including 1-2 conference.

In game 1, Bentley took a 3-0 lead in the second when junior second baseman Jackson Walonis (Walpole/Walpole HS) hit the first of his two triples and scored on a sac fly by junior center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington/Lexington HS).

Bentley broke the game wide open in the fifth with nine runs. DeMartinis III had a two-run homer, Walonis a two-run triple and Beauregard a two-run infield single.

The Falcons added two more runs in the seventh on a single to left by sophomore catcher Patrick Purcell (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central HS).

Heber was outstanding as he allowed only one earned run, did not issue a walk and fanned a dozen, including ten swinging. It was his second win of the season.

Bentley's 14 hits included three apiece for Walonis and senior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS), as well as two from freshman shortstop Tommy Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Henry B. Platt HS), DeMartinis and Beauregard.

The Falcons, who were the designated road team, led the nightcap 3-0 three batters into the game. Graduate left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) had an infield single, freshman shortstop Tommy Bolton (Tampa, Fla./Henry B. Platt HS) singled to center and DeMartinis III drove the ball over the center field fence for a 3-0 lead.

Sears made it a 4-2 game with an RBI single in the sixth, and Bentley manufactured an insurance run in the seventh. DeMartinis walked, moved to third on a failed pickoff and scored when Beauregard was caught stealing.

That run was needed as junior second baseman Jack Barry (Bridgewater) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman lefty Matt Fernandez (Needham/Needham HS) put a half to the comeback with a strikeout and a fly out.

Fernandez saved the game for Beauregard, who allowed six hits and one earned run in 4.1 innings. Fernandez pitched the final 2.2 with one strikeout.

Bentley outhit the Hounds 10-6 with Sears, Bolton, DeMartinis III and Cacciatore all having two.

The two teams will complete their four-game series Monday at 3 pm at Assumption.
