Bentley Finishes Opening Weekend 3-1 after Falling in Finale, 16-5

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Assumption University broke a 1-1 tie with a six-run fifth-inning and went on to defeat Bentley University, 16-5, in the finale of a four-game series in non-conference baseball Sunday afternoon at Lake Brantley, Fla.

With the win, the Greyhounds (2-5) avoided being swept by the Falcons, who took the first three games 13-8, 12-11 and 7-0.

Assumption was led by the top of its order with sophomore right fielder Cody Smith (Holden, Mass.) and junior second baseman Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass.) combining for five hits, runs and RBIs. Smith had three of each as well as two walks and Barry two of each. Each homered in the game and Smith also had a double.

Assumption graduate shortstop Jake Hamel (Oxbridge, Mass.) also contributed to the win with three hits, two runs and an RBI.

The Greyhounds added to their 8-1 lead with three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and three more in the eighth. They finished with 15 hits with eight different players having at least one.

For Bentley, senior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS) had two hits, including his third home run of the weekend.  Also with two hits for the Falcons were freshman DH Tommy Goonan (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial HS) and junior second baseman Jackson Walonis (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS).

Graduate left fielder Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) doubled in a run in the second, Walonis had an RBI single in the fifth, Beauregard homered and sophomore catcher Patrick Purcell (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central HS) had a sac fly in the seventh, and senior Tommy Fisher (Stoughton, Mass./Catholic Memorial HS) capped the Falcon scoring with an RBI single in the ninth.

Bentley's next scheduled action is a doubleheader against St. Michael's College on Saturday. The site for that one will be finalized later in the week.
