Bentley Holds Off Pace, 12-8; 3 Hits Apiece for Halloran, Rizzuto & Bright

WALTHAM, Mass. – After a 23-run, 22-hit performance in game two Thursday at St. Michael's, the Bentley University baseball team kept the bats going on Friday, using 15 singles to dispatch visiting Pace University, 12-8, in non-conference action on DeFelice Field.

The Falcons, 14-22, crammed all their scoring into three innings, putting a five on the scoreboard in the first, a four in the fifth and adding three runs to their total in the seventh. Pace (19-17) cut the Bentley advantage in half with four runs in the eighth inning.

Bentley's offense featured graduate center fielder Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) amd junior shortstop Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS), with each providing three hits and two RBI. Junior third baseman Cory Bright (Melrose/Bishop Fenwick HS) also had three hits, giving him eight in his last ten at bats.

The first five Falcons to step to the plate in the game reached and scored. After a hit batter, a single and an error loaded the bases, junior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) singled down the left field line, driving in the first two runs. Senior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Rizzuto drew a bases-loaded walk and Halloran singled in the final run of the first.

In the fifth, Bright, Sears, Rizzuto and sophomore second baseman Tony Gonzalez (Windham, N.H./Lawrence Academy) all had RBI singles to make it a 9-1 game.

The seventh inning included an RBI single down the right field line by Gonzalez, an RBI single through the right side by Halloran and a sacrifice fly by sophomore DH Jackson Walonis (Walpole/Walpole  HS).

Sears and Zupkus both had two RBI and two runs scored.

Pace was led by freshman left fielder Matthew Rinaldi (Scarsdale, N.Y.) with his three hits and four RBI including a three-run homer in the seventh.

Freshman right-hander Marc Cedrone (Walpole/Xaverian Brothers HS) earned the win for Bentley. He limited the Setters to one run over the first six innings before giving up three in the seventh.

The two teams will be back on DeFelice Field Saturday afternoon for a noon doubleheader.
