Late Rally Helps No. 12 Southern N.H. Sweep Bentley, 7-2 & 6-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman right fielder Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) delivered a bases-loaded triple to right center with two outs in the top of the seventh to give Southern New Hampshire University, the 12th-ranked team in Division II, its tenth straight win and a doubleheader sweep of Bentley University, 6-4, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Saturday at DeFelice Field. The score in the opener was 7-2.

Bentley (11-12, 6-12 NE10) took the early lead with two runs in the first and two more in the seventh as the Falcons capitalized on wildness by three Penmen pitchers.

Leadoff hitter Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS), a senior center fielder, walked and scored on a wild pitch, and junior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS) picked up his 31st RBI on the season on a ground out.

In the second, Halloran had an RBI single to left and once again scored on a wild pitch, making it 4-0.

Southern New Hampshire battled back with two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth, drawing to within one. Sophomore catcher Nick Schwatz (Massapequa, N.Y.) led off the seventh and final inning with a double to right center. Senior DH Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) singled through the left side, and after a pop-out and an intentional walk, senior right-hander Brandon Ostiguy (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) got a strikeout for out number two.

That brought Poole, who began the day with a .586 average in 29 at bats, to the plate and he remained sizzling hot.

Sophomore Nick Assad (Franklin), who gave the Penmen five innings of three-hit scoreless relief, put the Falcons down in order in the bottom of the seventh to complete the four-game series sweep.

Rizzuto and senior catcher Charlie Auditore (Walpole/Walpole HS) each had two hits for Bentley. For SNHU, Poole, Mulcay and Schwartz matched the two Falcons in the hit column.

The Penmen took control of the opened early, scoring three times in the second and four more in the third. Sophomore second baseman Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) had a two-run single in the second and four different players drove in a run in the third.

Bentley's runs were scored on an RBI single by Rizzuto in the second and a sacrifice fly by freshman shortstop Alex Bodnar (North Andover/Brooks School) in the fourth.

The Falcons were outhit 11-5 with Beauregard the only Falcon with two. As they did in the nightcap, Mulcay and Schwartz each had two hits for the Penmen (28-7, 14-2 NE10).

Bentley will return to action Thursday with a doubleheader at St. Michael's.
