Bentley Takes Two from Assumption, 6-5 and 10-6

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) drove in two runs in each game and junior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS) had a four-hit afternoon as Bentley University swept Assumption University, 6-5 and 10-6, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Saturday afternoon on DeFelice Field.

Bentley, which went into the sixth of the seven-inning opener looking at a 4-2 deficit, turned things around by scoring four times in the frame. Zupkus led off with a walk and junior second baseman Cory Bright (Melrose/Bishop Fenwick HS) followed with a single left center. After a wild pitch put both in scoring position, senior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) delivered with a game-tying two-run single up the middle.

Sears scored the go-ahead run on an Assumption fielding miscue and a sacrifice fly by sophomore DH Jackson Walonis (Walpole/Walpole HS) tacked on an insurance run.

Assumption (17-13, 10-5 NE10) scored once in the seventh and had the potential tying run on third before graduate lefty Jared Brooks (Hollis Center, Maine/Cheverus HS) wrapped up the complete game with a fly ball to center. Brooks, 5-2 on the season, walked only one and struck out nine.

Bentley's other two runs were scored in the first on a two-run double by Zupkus. The Falcons were facing six-foot-six Assumption lefty Jack Choate (North Grafton), who had struck out 68 in 34.2 innings this season. Against the Falcons, he fanned seven and was charged with all five runs.

Game two saw the Falcons (10-18, 5-8 NE10) erupt for 17 hits off five Greyhound pitchers. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit and five different Bentley players had at least one hit, one run and one RBI.

Bentley, which has won four of its last five, jumped on top early, scoring four times in the first. Beauregard, Zupkus, Bright and junior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS) all had RBI singles in the inning.

The seven-inning game saw coach Bob DeFelice's club add to its total with a run in the second, three in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Beauregard and Rizzuto were both three-for-four and both Bright and Zupkus had two RBI.

Graduate righty Jimmy Hodgson (Newton/Newton North HS) earned the win, his third of the season, with junior David Morganelli (Norfolk/King Philip Reg. HS) coming on to pitch the final two innings.

The series will conclude and an 11-game Falcon homestand will continue Monday when the two teams meet on DeFelice Field at 3:30 pm.
