Zupkus Shines as Bentley Sweeps St. Michael’s; Halloran Drives in 4

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) had four hits, three RBI and a remarkable homerun-stealing catch as Bentley University swept St. Michael's College, 4-3 and 8-7, in a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday at Doc Jacobs Field.

The catch by Zupkus, a dive over the right field fence, took a two-run homer away from sophomore center fielder Andrew Lanthier (Orwell, Vt.) in the third and kept the opener scoreless at the time.

Two innings later, Zupkus led off the fifth with a single to left and scored the game's first run on a single through the left side by graduate center fielder Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS).

After the Purple Knights tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth, Bentley regained the lead with three in the sixth. Junior first baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS) was hit by a pitch, senior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) singled and sophomore second baseman Tyler Gonzalez (Windham, N.H./Lawrence Academy) followed with an RBI single through the left side.

Later in the fifth, Sears and Gonzalez each scored on sacrifice flies to center, the first by Zupkus and the second by Halloran.

With St. Michael's down a run, graduate righty Sean Mahan (Woburn, Mass./Matignon HS) saved the game for graduate righty Jimmy Hodgson (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS) with a scoreless ninth.

Sears, Halloran and junior third baseman Cory Bright (Melrose, Mass./Bishop Fenwick HS) each had two hits for Bentley, which had ten as a team.

Game two saw the Falcons (8-17, 3-7 NE10) erase a 3-1 deficit with a four-run fifth. Graduate DH Charlie Auditore (Walpole, Mass./ Walpole HS) had an RBI single, junior catcher Brian Lindsay (New Durham, N.H./Kingswood Reg. HS) scored on a fielder's choice, and Zupkus had a two-run single to right center.

After St. Michael's (3-15, 2-4) scored twice in the sixth to make it 5-5, Bentley struck for three runs in its next at bat. Beauregard was again hit by a pitch, Zupkus singled and junior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) had a tiebreaking single to left. Halloran followed with a two-run double to right center, scoring both Zupkus and Rizzuto.

A two-run single by SMC's Ulysses Luciano (Bronx, N.Y.) made it an 8-7 game in the ninth before junior David Morganelli (Norfolk, Mass./Bishop Fenwick HS) came in to save the win for graduate lefty Jared Brooks (Hollis Center, Maine/Cheverus HS).

Zupkus was 3-for-4 while Halloran, Auditore and freshman shortstop Alex Bodnar (North Andover, Mass./Brooks School) each had two hits for the Falcons.

Bentley will begin a four-game home series with Assumption University Friday at 3:30 pm.
