Bentley Falls to Assumption, 12-4; Walonis Homers and Triples for Falcons

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Despite a home run and triple from sophomore second baseman Jackson Walonis (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS), the Bentley University baseball team concluded a three-game weekend at Rollins College with a 12-4 non-conference loss to Assumption University at Alfond Stadium.

The Greyhounds, 4-5, were led by leadoff hitter and sophomore DH Owen Podolec (Berwick, Maine), who was 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI. In addition, they received 3.2 innings of scoreless relief from junior Justin Ray (Portland, Maine) and freshman Alexander Messig (Nashua, N.H.).

Bentley took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when junior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) doubled and scored on a two-bagger by senior catcher Charlie Auditore (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS).

After the Greyhounds scored two unearned runs in their half of the inning, Bentley drew even in the fifth when Walonis led off with a home run to left, his second of the year.

Assumption sophomore second baseman Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass.) answered with a round tripper of his own in the bottom of the fifth and the Hounds remained in front the rest of the way. They pulled away with three in the sixth, two in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Bentley's other two runs came in the sixth, making it a one-run game at the time, 5-4. Both scored on a two-run double to left center by junior third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS).

Assumption's 13-hit attack also included two from Barry and sophomore left fielder Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass.).

For Bentley, Zupkus, Auditore and junior Eddy Beauregard (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS) matched Walonis' two hits.

Bentley (2-7) will be back in the Sunshine State on Friday to take on St. Cloud State in Sanford, Fla. Game time will be 6 pm.
