Bentley’s School Record Win Streak Halted at 9 as Falcons Are Swept; Berardino Stays Red-Hot

WALTHAM, Mass. – A three-run fourth inning lifted Assumption University to a 3-2 game one victory over Bentley University and the Greyhounds went on to sweep the doubleheader with an 11-9 game two win in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Monday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Bentley, which had tied the school record for longest winning streak (9) on Sunday, fell to 12-5 overall and 11-5 NE10. Assumption improved to 6-8, both overall and conference.

Spoiled with the two losses was an outstanding day by Bentley graduate first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS), who saw his batting average climb to a sizzling .484. The 2019 Red Sox draft pick was 5-for-6 on the day, including 4-for-4 in game two, with a homer, two runs scored and four RBI.

All of Assumption's runs in the opener came in the bottom of the fourth after Bentley had jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Sacrifice flies by graduate catcher Matt Schneider (Dalton) and sophomore DH Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) evened the game and freshman leftfielder Jared Berardino (Rowley) scored what proved to be the game-winner on a wild pitch.

Senior shortstop Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) had an RBI single in the first for the Falcons and the fourth-inning run scored on a Berardino sacrifice fly following a triple from sophomore third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS).

The two teams combined for just nine hits, including five by the Hounds. Winning pitcher Jack Choate (Oxford, Conn.) struck out nine in his 6.2 innings of work and junior righty Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) came in for a one-out save, stranding runners on the corner.

In the nightcap, after squandering a 4-0 lead and falling behind 7-4, Bentley rallied for three runs in the seventh to even the contest at 7-7. Sophomore right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./ Holy Cross HS) scored on a balk and Berardino homered to left center, with Halloran scoring in front of him.

Assumption more than answered in the eighth, striking for four runs with the inning including the fourth hit of the game by Schneider and the third RBI for Acosta.

Bentley cut the deficit in half during the top of the ninth, scoring twice on a home run by Zupkus and an RBI double by junior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS), but came up short in the end.

Bentley, which was outhit 15-13, received two hits from Zupkus, Halloran, Sears and sophomore DH Joe Boushell (Mansfield/Wheeler School), in addition to the four from Berardino. In addition, there was a third-inning two-run homer by Rizzuto.

The Falcons will be back on DeFelice Field Wednesday for a non-conference game against Stonehill College (3:30 pm, NE10 NOW).
