Bentley Sweeps Assumption, 4-1 and 10-3, To Stretch Win Streak to 9, Tying School Record

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate righty Paul Frisoli (Watertown/Arlington Catholic HS) scattered two hits over eight innings in game one and the Falcon offense pounded out eight extra base hits in game two as Bentley University swept Assumption University, 4-1 and 10-3, in a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

The two wins boosted Bentley to 12-3 overall (11-3 NE10) and extended the team's winning streak to nine games, matching the school record in 1990 and also achieved in 2001.

The opener was a pitcher's duel between Frisoli and Assumption senior right-hander Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn.) through six innings with the only run being a home run to center by graduate catcher Matt Schneider (Dalton) in the fourth.

The Falcons, who were the designated away team, got on the board in the top of the seventh before scoring four against the Hounds' bullpen in the final two innings. In the seventh, senior catcher Charlie Auditore (Walpole/Walpole HS) singled up the middle, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Jackson Walonis (Walpole/Walpole HS).

In the eighth, after loading the bases on a walk, an error on a sacrifice bunt and a hit batter, Bentley scored the go-ahead run on a foul sacrifice fly to short by junior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS). With the shortstop's momentum taking him away from home plate, senior shortstop Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) raced home to score.

Later in the inning, Auditore had a two-run single. He was also involved in the ninth inning run, with his single driving in Walonis from second.

Bentley's nine hits included two apiece from sophomore third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS), graduate first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS), Auditore and Walonis.

Frisoli, in his eight innings of work, walked one and struck out eight. Senior righty Jimmy Cunningham (Chatham, N.J./Chatham HS) came on for the ninth and struck out the side.

Bentley opened game two with a seven-run second inning making it an 8-0 game. The inning featured five extra base hits with triples from Walonis and Sears, and doubles from sophomore right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS), Auditore and Berardino, as well as three Assumption errors. RBIs in the inning were provided by Walonis, Zupkus, Berardino and Sears.

Bentley reached double figures in the runs column for the sixth time this season with two more runs in the sixth. Included was an RBI double by Auditore, who was 4-for-8 with three runs scored and three RBI in the twinbill.

Halloran had three of Bentley's 15 hits, and the Falcons also received two apiece from Zupkus, Auditore and Walonis.

Senior righty Evan Christopulos (Andover/Andover HS) pitched the first six innings and finished the game with a 1.50 ERA. He allowed four hits and one unearned run while striking out four. Junior righty Zach Zdimal (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) came on for the seventh and final inning, and struck out two.

Bentley (12-3, 11-3 NE10) and Assumption (4-8, 4-8 NE10) will square off in another doubleheader Monday at noon on DeFelice Field. Watch live on NE10 NOW.
