Bentley Runs Streak to 6 with 7-0, 11-2 Wins over St. Michael’s

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior lefty Jared Brooks (Hollis Center, Maine/Cheverus HS) pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener and the Falcons scored in six different innings in the nightcap as the Bentley University Falcons extended their winning streak to six with a doubleheader sweep of St. Michael's College, 7-0 and 11-2, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball on DeFelice Field Sunday.

Bentley, which outscored the Purple Knights 41-8 during the four-game weekend sweep, improved to 9-3 overall and in conference. St. Michael's dropped to 1-7 overall and 1-6 conference.

Brooks, who transferred from Stonehill College before last season, impressed during his DeFelice Field debut. In the seven-inning game, he struck out seven and walked four while allowing singles in the second and fifth innings. The victory was his second in as many starts this spring.

The offense was led by sophomore third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS), who had four RBI, and senior shortstop Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS), with four runs scored and a school record-tying four stolen bases.

Bentley jumped out to a 3-0 lead with single runs in each of the first three innings. Rizzuto drove in Halloran with a single to right in the first, sophomore DH Joe Boushell (Mansfield/Wheeler School) had an RBI single to right in the second, and graduate first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) drove in a run in the third with a single to short.

The Falcons opened the game up with three runs in the fourth. Rizzuto had a two-run single to center and Halloran scored on a passed ball.

Rizzuto and Berardino each had two of Bentley's nine hits in the contest.

Game two saw Bentley claim the early lead with three runs in the first inning. Following a Rizzuto double and a Halloran walk, Berardino cleared the bases with a triple to right. Junior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) followed with a sacrifice fly for the Falcons' third run.

After scoring single runs in each of the next three innings, Bentley made it an 8-2 game with two runs in the fifth. Senior Charlie Auditore (Walpole/Walpole HS), who caught 30 of 32 innings during the four-game series, had the team's eighth sacrifice fly of the series and Boushell delivered an RBI single.

A three-run eighth included Rizzuto's fifth RBI of the doubleheader and Berardino's fourth.

Bentley's 12 hits included two apiece from Berardino, Sears, Boushell and freshman center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington/Lexington HS).

Graduate lefty Lloyd Hill (Milton/Milton HS) pitched the first seven innings before junior righty Brandon Ostiguy (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) came on to pitch the final two. Hill scattered four hits, allowed one earned run and struck out seven.

Bentley's next 14 games are on the road, beginning Wednesday afternoon at Stonehill. The next home contest is not until May 7.
