Bentley Takes Two from Saint Anselm, 10-7 and 9-4

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman second baseman Jackson Walonis (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) drove in five runs, including three on his first career home run, and graduate designated hitter Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, N.H./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) matched his three hits, as Bentley University defeated Saint Anselm College, 10-7, in the first half of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Sullivan Park.

Bentley completed the doubleheader sweep and improved to 5-3, both overall and NE10, by taking the nightcap, 9-4.

The Falcons got off to fast starts in both games, scoring four times in both the first and second innings of the opener, and put up five runs in the first three innings of game two.

All four in the first inning came with two outs. Sophomore third baseman and NE10 Rookie of the Week Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) scored on a throwing error, senior catcher Charlie Auditore (Walpole/Walpole HS) had an RBI single and Walonis made it a 4-0 game with a two-run single to right.

The second inning again featured Walonis. With Auditore and Berardino on base, Walonis drove the ball over the left field fence for an 8-0 lead.

In the seven-inning game, Bentley carried a 10-4 lead into Saint Anselm's final at bat. The Hawks cut the difference in half before senior right-hander Jimmy Hodgson (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS) closed out the game.

Bentley's 14-hit attack included three apiece from Walonis and Berardino, along with two from Auditore. The Falcon catcher also scored twice and recorded two RBI.

Berardino opened the scoring in game two with his single up the middle scoring sophomore right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) for the early 1-0 lead.

Boushell had a two-run single in the second and in the third, a sacrifice fly from freshman center fielder Joe Cacciatore (Lexington, Mass./Lexington HS) made it a 5-0 game.

After the Hawks pulled within two runs at 5-3, Bentley opened the game up with four runs in the seventh. Junior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield, Mass./Pope Francis HS) had an RBI single, Berardino scored on an error, Sears crossed home plate on a wild pitch and Cacciatore had his second sac fly of the game.

Boushell and Sears each accounted for two of Bentley's seven hits in the game.

Graduate lefty Lloyd Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS), the Falcon starter, earned the win after allowing six hits and three runs in five innings. He walked five and struck out four. The bullpen was solid with freshman Bobby DiCapua (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip HS), junior Brendan Ostiguy (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) and Hodgson combining to allow only one run in four innings.

Bentley will return to action this weekend with a four-game homestand against St. Michael's this weekend on DeFelice Field.
