Bentley Splits With No. 16 Franklin Pierce for 2nd Straight Doubleheader

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate lefty Lloyd Hill (Milton/Milton HS) and senior righty Jimmy Hodgson (Newton/Newton North HS) combined on a three-hitter and sophomore shortstop Joe Boushell (Mansfield/Wheeler School) scored the winning run in the seven-inning opener on a wild pitch as Bentley University walked off for a 4-3 victory over 16th-ranked Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Wednesday afternoon on DeFelice Field. It was the Falcons' second walk-off victory in a span of three games over the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce came back to pick up the split as they took advantage of 15 hits and Bentley wildness (10 walks, 5 hit batters from seven pitchers) to prevail in the nightcap, 18-10.

With Game 1 even at 3-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, Boushell and sophomore third baseman Steve Rizzuto (Belmont/Belmont HS) both walked and graduate first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Franklin Pierce first baseman Jonel Uzona (New York, N.Y.) nearly got his team out of trouble with an unassisted doubleheader, but Boushell scored on a wild pitch for the game's winning run.

Boushell and Rizzuto scored on a two-run single by junior left fielder Liam Sears (Springfield/Pope Francis HS) to give Bentley a 2-0 lead in the third.

After the Ravens countered in the fourth and added a go-ahead run in the fifth, Bentley tied the game up at three apiece in the fifth. Sears doubled to left and scored the equalizer on a wild pitch.

Hill pitched the first 4.1 innings and gave up one hit and two runs. Hodgson, who gained the win in his first appearance of the season, allowed two hits and one run in his three innings of work.

Game two was a high-scoring contest with Bentley in front 10-9 before Franklin Pierce broke things open with a seven-run seventh.

Ozuna had two hits and four RBI, and graduate third baseman Tyler Patane (Lake Grove, N.Y.) finished with two hits and three hits. Everyone in the Raven lineup scored, including senior designated player Dylan Jones (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) with four runs.

Sophomore righty Andres Auffant (Center Moriches, N.Y.) started and was the winning pitcher for Franklin Pierce (5-2, 2-2 NE10), despite allowing 10 hits and 10 runs in his six innings of work.

Rizzuto led Bentley with four hits in five at bats, along with three RBI and two runs scored.

Bentley (2-2, 2-2 NE10) will play a doubleheader at Saint Anselm Saturday and Monday afternoons.
