5-Run 7th Inning Propels Bridgeport Past Bentley, 10-4
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The University of Bridgeport broke a 3-3 deadlock with a five-run seventh inning and went on to post a 10-4 win over Bentley University in the opener of a four-game non-conference series Saturday at Lake Brantley High School.
Following a walk, a single and a pair of stolen bases, the Purple Knights (3-3-1) reclaimed the lead on a two-run double to center by sophomore shortstop Logan Allen (Magnolia, Texas). He later scored on a fielder's choice and Bridgeport added to its lead with a two-run triple to center by sophomore first baseman Matt Rodriguez (New Milford, Conn.).
A half-inning before, Bentley scored three times to erase a 3-0 Bridgeport lead. Graduate third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) led off with a single to left and senior center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS) followed with a double to center.
Both scored on a single to left by senior left fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS). Later in the frame, Figueira scored the tying run on a double to left by senior catcher Christopher Butler (Danvers, Mass./ BB&N).
Bentley's final run of the afternoon was an eighth-inning home run to left by senior shortstop Chris Hopkins (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic HS).
Pierce was the only Falcon to have multiple hits as he finished two-for-four.
Rodriguez (3-for-4, 4 RBI) and Allen (2-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI) led the offense for Bridgeport, which outhit the Falcons 12-7.
Each of the next three games are scheduled for 11 am starts at Lake Brantley.
