Bentley Comeback Falls Short Against Chestnut Hill, 7-6

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – After trailing 4-0 early, Bentley University twice closed to within one run before dropping the rubber game of a three-game series with Chestnut Hill College, 7-6, in non-conference baseball Sunday afternoon at the Santaluces Sports Complex.

Bentley's eight-hit attack included two apiece from senior center Christopher Butler (Danvers, Mass./BB&N) and junior second baseman Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS).

Chestnut Hill was led by junior Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.), who pitched four no-hit innings and junior center fielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.), with three hits, two runs and two RBI.

Down 4-1, Bentley drew within one with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Halloran picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded fielders' choice to shot and senior center Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS) was hit by a pitch, forcing in another run.

After the Griffins made it 6-3 with two in the top of the seventh, Bentley got one back in the bottom of the frame. Senior shortstop Chris Hopkins (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) singled in senior left fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS), who had singled and advanced on a wild pitch.

In the eighth, with Bentley again down three after a home run from junior Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.), Troiani reached on an error and freshman DH Steve Rizzuto (Belmont, Mass./Belmont HS) singled to give Bentley two base runners with one out. Both scored on a double to left from senior first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS). Junior Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) moved over from third to the mound and got out of the inning with two ground ball outs.

Bentley, 2-6, was just four of 18 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 on base.

The Falcons will return to Florida at the end of the week for eight games, beginning Saturday with a four-game series against Bridgeport.
