Bentley Holds On For 10-8 Win at Saint Anselm, Completing Series Sweep

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three-run innings in the second and fourth innings propelled Bentley University to a 9-1 lead and the Falcons held on for a 10-8 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Monday afternoon at Sullivan Park.

The victory completed a sweep of the three-game series and boosted the Falcons to 17-20 overall, including 11-6 in divisional play. The Falcons have won eight of their last ten, a stretch in which they've outscored the opposition 77-33.

The win went to sophomore right hander Jimmy Hodgson (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS), who pitched a season-long five and two-thirds innings in his second start and 15th appearance of the season. He limited the Hawks (6-32, 1-16 Northeast) to five hits and finished with two walks and five strikeouts.

Hodgson's teammates parlayed nine hits, three sacrifice flies, a hit batter and 13 walks to double figures in the scoring column. Eight players crossed home plate for the Falcons, seven had at least one hit and a half-dozen were credited with an RBI. Junior third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) (2 hits, 2 RBI, 1 run) and senior first baseman Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) (2 runs, 1 hit, 1 RBI) cracked all three categories.

Two walks, a wild pitch and a ground out by sophomore shortstop Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton, Mass./ Hopkinton HS) produced the Falcons' first run of the game in the second. Later in the inning, Pierce brought in two runs when he singled through the left side.

A third inning sacrifice fly by senior Gino Fordiani (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) made it 4-0 and the Falcons added three more runs to their total in the fourth. That inning included a two-run double down the right field line by junior designated hitter Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./ Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) and a Grover sacrifice fly.

In the sixth, Fordiani drew a bases-loaded walk and Butler had the Falcons' third sac fly of the afternoon.

In addition to Pierce, junior left fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS) had two hits for the Falcons.

Saint Anselm, which has lost 16 straight, got back in the contest with two runs in the seventh, four in the eighth and one in the ninth before senior righty Ryan Corriveau (Milton, N.H./Nute HS) got a game-ending fielder's choice.

Bentley is back in action Tuesday with a home game against Stonehill College.
