Bentley Prevails in Game 1, 8-3; Assumption Comes Back to Take Nightcap, 4-2

WORCESTER, Mass. – With the middle of the lineup combining for seven RBI, including three by junior left fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton/Taunton HS), the Bentley University baseball team captured the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Assumption College, 8-3, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball on Rocheleau Field.

After dropping the first two games of the series, including 13-5 on Friday, Assumption avoided the sweep with a 4-2 victory in game two.

In game one, graduate student Mike Samko (Arlington/BB&N) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored (including the 100th of his career), junior first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, senior right fielder Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) drove in two and Figueira had a home run.

Bentley took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning a, after taking advantage of a walk and an error. Junior third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) led off with a walk. Samko singled down the right field line and when the ball was misplayed, Pierce scored. Samko advanced to third on Berardino's single and scored on Grover's ground out.

Both teams scored three times in the sixth, resulting in a 5-3 Bentley lead. For the Falcons, Berardino had a two-run single and he scored on a Grover sacrifice fly.

Figueira broke it open in the eighth with Samko and Berardino scoring on his three-run homer to center.

Senior righty Paul Frisoli (Watertown/Arlington Catholic HS) earned the win after allowing six hits and three runs in six innings or work. He walked two and struck out three before sophomore Will Rossiter (Granite Springs, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic HS) came in for the final three innings and the save. Rossiter scattered five hits and struck out four.

Bentley struck first in the nightcap, scoring two in the fourth when Figueira's homer to center brought in Grover ahead of him. His second round tripper of the day was his fifth of the season.

Assumption more than answered in the bottom of the fourth. Senior left fielder Trevor McQuade (Westwood) had a two-run double and scored on an RBI single by junior third baseman Matt Lonardo (Cranston, R.I.).

The game's only other run was scored in the fifth, an RBI single to left by junior catcher Derek Adamson (Chelmsford).

Bentley (6-14, 3-3 Northeast-10, 2-2 NE10 Northeast) had seven hits, including two apiece from Grover and junior center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS).
