Rey & Korwek Help Bentley Stay Hot, 5-1 over Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior right-hander Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) scattered six hits and his catcher, senior Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS), led an 11-hit attack with three hits and two RBI as Bentley University topped Merrimack College, 5-1, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Tuesday afternoon at Warrior Diamond.

The win was the tenth in the last 12 games for the Falcons, who improved to 17-15 overall, 10-7 in the NE-10 and 6-3 in NE-10 divisional play. That kept Bentley in third place in the Northeast Division overall and tied with the top two, Southern New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce, in the loss column.

Rey, in his second straight complete game victory, allowed just one unearned run while walking one and striking out four. The strong effort lowered his ERA to a team-best 1.81.

Rey, who was primarily a first baseman the last three years, was staked to a 2-0 lead before he threw his first pitch. Junior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) opened the game with a single through the left side and went to third on a double down the left field line by freshman first baseman Evan Mondor (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS). After starter and loser Tim Cashman (Rowley), who started the day with a 1.48 ERA, retired the next two batters, Korwek singled down the left field line to drive in both Keady and Mondor.

In the third, Bentley struck for three two-out runs, beginning with a home run to left center by junior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS). It was Nagy's seventh of the year, the most by any East Region player. Korwek and junior shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) followed with singles, and Korwek scored on a single to left by junior third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS). Brennan moved to third when the left fielder mishandled the ball and scored on the Warriors' second error of the inning.

An RBI single by junior third baseman Eddie Newton (North Billerica) in the fourth gave Merrimack its only run, scoring senior DH Joe Mantoni (Northbridge), who had reached on an error.

Bentley threatened to add to its lead over the next four innings, leaving two runners on base in each. In both the sixth and seventh, the Falcons had the bases loaded with one out before Merrimack escaped with double plays that went through the catcher and then to first.

In addition to the three hits from Korwek, Keady and Witkowski had more than one for Bentley, each finishing two-for-five. Korwek extended his hitting streak to 15, Brennan stretched his to 14, and the Falcons stole a season-high seven bases, including two by both Mondor and his former high school teammate, Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS).

After an 18-6 start, Merrimack lost its seventh straight to drop to 18-13 overall, 9-8 Northeast-10 and 4-5 NE Division.

Bentley, in the midst of five straight on the road, will play a 3:30 pm non-divisional game at Assumption College Wednesday.
