Bentley Drops Finale to Rollins, 9-6, Despite HR and 3 RBI by Korwek

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Bentley University was denied in its bid to complete a three-game sweep of Rollins College as the Tars scored in five straight innings to post a 9-6 win over the Falcons in non-conference college baseball Presidents' Day afternoon at Alfond Stadium.

Bentley, which had won the first two games of the series by the scores of 4-3 in 16 innings and 14-3, was powered by senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS). He had an RBI single during a three-run first that helped the Falcons build a 4-0 lead through three, and he completed the Falcons' scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth.

The game started on a positive note as junior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./ Norwood HS) led off with a single down the left field line and stole second base. Following a walk to freshman first baseman Evan Mondor (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth HS), senior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) plated both with a double. One out later, Korwek singled to left, scoring Gillis with the third run.

A two-out rally in the third gave Bentley its fourth run. Junior shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) singled to center, moved to third on a double to left center by junior third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) and scored on a Rollins fielding error.

Rollins climbed back into the game with one in the fourth and two in the fifth before taking control with a four-run sixth with the first three scoring before any batters were retired. Senior first baseman Brian Lattanzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led off with a single, junior center fielder Zach Persky (Solon, Ohio) drew a walk, and right fielder senior Brandon Curson (Woodstock, Ga.) evened the score with an RBI double to left. Following a pitching change, back-to-back one-strike singles by senior third baseman Steve Betcherman (Toronto, Ont.) and senior DH Boston Langley (Edmonton, Alb.) put the home team up 6-4. A sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Thomas Kelly (Arlington Heights, Ill.) capped the scoring in the inning.

Rollins added to its lead with single runs in the next two frames. Curson homered in the seventh and the run in the eighth was unearned.

Rollins, 2-5, outhit the Falcons 11-10 with Curson leading the way with three. Brennan was 3-for-4 for Bentley, and both Keady and Korwek had two hits.

Bentley, 3-3 and ranked tenth in the East Region by D2BaseballNews.com this week, after the second of four trips to the Sunshine State, will be back in Florida for a three-game series at nationally-ranked Nova Southeastern Mar. 1-3.
