Finneran Breaks Strikeout Record, but Saint Anselm Takes 2 from Bentley, 1-0 and 3-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior right-hander Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) pitched eight shutout innings in the opener, senior righty Sean Hayden (Haverhill) turned in eight quality innings in the nightcap and junior James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) saved both as Saint Anselm College swept Bentley University in a pair of pitchers' duels, 1-0 and 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Kelly, who had the only RBI in the first game, allowed five hits and four walks while striking out five. Hayden, who needed only 97 pitches during his eight innings, matched Kelly in hits allowed and finished with three walks and four strikeouts.

Bentley, which entered the day riding a five-game winning streak, received a pair of strong pitching performances as well, but managed only ten hits in the doubleheader.

Falcon grad student Rob Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS), who saw his personal four-game winning streak halted, limited Saint Anselm to just five hits in the opener and struck out nine to surpass Corey Bazylinski '99 as Bentley's all-time leader. The nine K's boosted Finneran's total to 190, one more than Bazylinski amassed from 1996-99.

Junior John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic HS) turned in a complete game effort for Bentley in the nightcap, allowing eight hits and three walks while fanning five. He gave up an unearned run in the third and single runs in the fourth and sixth.

The only run in the opener came in the top of the first and the winning pitcher, Kelly, played a role. Senior shortstop Jeff Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) led off the game with a walk, went all the way to third on a ground ball to third after the base was left uncovered, and scored on Kelly's broken bat single to center.

Finneran allowed only one more runner to advance as far as third base. That game in the ninth when the Hawks loaded the bases with one out, but the right-hander escaped trouble with his ninth strikeout and a grounder to short.

Bentley had runners on third base three times in the game but was only 1 of 17 in the contest when it had a runner on, including 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Saint Anselm took the lead in game two in the third. Junior center fielder Andrew Chandler (Westford) singled up the middle, took second on a Criscuolo single and advanced to third on a ball in the dirt. A two-out grounder to second by junior second baseman Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) was mishandled, allowing Chandler to score the game's first run.

An RBI single by sophomore left fielder Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) in the fourth made it 2-0.

The Falcons scored their only run of the afternoon in the fifth when senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by sophomore shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS).

Chandler, with a double, and Criscuolo, with an RBI single, teamed up again in the sixth to restore the Hawk lead to two runs.

Junior shortstop Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) had two of Bentley's five hits in the second game.

Bentley dropped to 13-13 overall, 13-6 against the NCAA Division II East Region and 1-2 in the Northeast Division. Saint Anselm, which has won three of four against the Falcons this spring, improved to 10-13-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the division.

The two teams will complete their three-game series Monday at DeFelice Field with the first pitch slated for 3:30 pm.
